July 2013

Hi everyone, greetings from the Uk. I've just booked a 3 day visit to Milwaukee, in early July 2013.

What would you recommend we see, in the short time that we are there?

We are reliant on public transport to get around.

It does look a lovely city, Hope you can help.

InterContinental is a good location--lots of restaurants within walking distance. Kil@wat, in the InterContinental is upscale, and very good.

Other options:

Rumpus Room

Mexican: Rudy's

Chinese: China Gourmet

Brew Pub: Rock Bottom or Water St Brewery

Thai: Thai Palace

Big vote here for Rumpus Room. I went there a couple weeks ago and it was wonderful. Also within walking distance is another one of my favorites Cubanitas. Very fun, great drinks (and food, too). Up a block from your hotel is Bar Louie, which has a really fun outdoor patio and great drink specials during the week.

The Intercontinental is a great location. A block to the west ove the river is Old Third World street with a wide selection of bars and restaurants. A block to the north on Water are several places, both casual and nicer. AJ Bombers has been featured on the Travel Channel for its burgers. Brick3 has great pizza. There are a couple of Irish pubs too. Just to the south of your hotel is the Waterfront Deli, which is outstanding for quick sandwich, soup or salad. Definitely no shortage of great place to eat downtown.

Living here and loving good beer I have found that the Brewery Boat Tour is one of the most fun ways to spend a summer Saturday or Sunday.

They go to 3 different breweries some with mini tours, you get 2 tickets for beers at each, and you get to ride on the river all included! Personally I prefer the Sunday tour because Lakefront Brewery has a full brewery tour and fantastic beer.

Bradford Beach is very fun for people watching, sunbathing, and reading. You will notice the smell from the lake- and you will see people in the water, I personally do not recommend going in past your ankles myself.... Alterra on the Lake is a great place nearby for coffee or tea or food but plan to wait in line as it is also popular.

Summerfest is massive and crowded but kind of a "must do" if you're going to be here during that time as there is always music playing throughout the day for everyone's liking. They do a great job of having a mixture of the city's restaurants and bars represented. It is more of a family atmosphere during the day, and the kids come out at night (especially along the lake and towards the North stages). It will be a few more months before the lineups are determined so keep checking back as your trip gets closer. http://www.summerfest.com

Blu is a bar on the 23rd floor of the Pfister hotel (be sure to ask for the correct elevator to take so you get up there easily) It's dimly lit and romantic as there is often live music but popular on the weekends so sometimes hard to get a seat. Here will give you one of the best views of the city available to the public.

The Eatery on Farwell is a wonderful place for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Jow Nai Fouquet has really amazing authentic Thai food (also on Farwell near the Eatery)

Water Street to the North of where you are staying is really where all the newly 21 kids hang out- avoid it at all costs past 10pm. Milwaukee Street has a similar vibe but with more money being flashed.. Avoid. Old World 3rd Street has our version of the Hofbrauhaus and is fun and Buckley's next door has the longest bar in the city which is cool. South on Water Street and toward the 3rd Ward is a lot better for anyone who wants to have a good time drinking without silly kids.

When in doubt- use the Yelp(.com or the app) or Trip Advisor for help based on where you are at the time!

Sorry for the extra long post but considering it is currently 7 degrees Fahrenheit right now, it's too exciting to think about the city in the summertime... Oh my goodness I cannot wait!

Hi Heather

Thank you for that excellent information, the brewery tour sounds right up my street, -- there are some great ideas there.

I like the sound of Buckleys, we used to have a Buckleys brewery in South Wales, which has now been merged into the BRAINs brewery set up. I wonder if there is an ancestral connection!

Thanks for the tip re the younger flashy set! Will certainly bear that in mind. The info on summerfest is useful, we will be there for the last 2 days, so hopefully can catch the tail end of it.

Great tip re avoiding the lake water!, We have the same problem here, our advantage is that its tidal, with a 30 foot rise and fall twice a day!

As for the -7, keep that .. we got 7 inches of snow ...... 5 more than we usually get! ... chaos abounds. However, this weekend sees a rapid thaw setting in.

As you say, roll on summer! Can't wait to experience what sounds like a terrific city.

Thanks ever so much for replying ................ keep warm

Wow: thanks for visiting us here in Milwaukee I know you will love it.

I second Jow Nai Fouquet It is a great reastaurant.... You can't walk there from your hotel, but taxi is good.

also this place is very small and excellent.

If you like to be on the water and fish you may want to try kayak fishing out on the lake. If your up for a little adventure.

You can get a guide to take you out and catch some big fish from a kayak.

It feels so good to be out there at sunrise and hook a big fish, watching the sun come up and see the City skyline come to life.

I know he would pick you up from the hotel, just ask.

Summerfest is a great event, but plan to spend a whole day there.

There are other options for curises on the river besides the beer one, they have many others available also. Not that I don't like beer, we brew it at home. :)

Enjoy your short stay with us.
