White water rafting

Does anyone have a recommendation as to a good white water rafting company to book with. I am going with my husband and his brother and 2 boys for a long weekend. We were planning on staying at the Hampton Inn at Summersville so we can visit the bridge, go rafting, and do a little hiking.

Songer is a good one.

Why stay at the hampton inn, when you can stay in a house. Check out

Here is website with a list of some very reputable outfitters. Songer, Class VI, Ace and North American River Runners....any of those would be my first choice.

You might want to stay closer to Fayetteville, where most of the rafting companies are. There are a few hotels in that area. Or even Beckley. More to choose from there too.

Thanks. I will check them out and also the link to the houses. I thought hotels would be the most cost effective but I'll check out the houses.

Another possiblity for lodging would be cabin at Hico. Near intersection of Rt 60 and Rt 19. Closer to rafting/bridge than Summersville. Short drive to Hawks Nest Lodge, tram, Mystery Hole. Maybe an hour to Lewisburg for caverns.

Ask six people about rafting you'll get six answers. My favorite was always Rivers. Very rustic and laid back.

Well....Used to be rustic and laid back.....Looks like name, logo and web-site changed.

How old are the boys? Some age restrictions on rafting trips. Gauley is pretty much off limits to kids. Lower New River maybe for young teens. Upper New for smaller kids. More of a float trip than whitewater.

Can't visit the area without a meal at Dirty Ernie's!

Would still check and ask the rafting outfitter. My guess would be they would be OK for Lower New. My last trip was several years ago. Family(mom, dad, two young girls) were in a raft.

Forgot to add last night. Some education for the boys. Maybe 45 minutes south to Beckley. Beckley Exibition Coal Mine. Closed for year during total redo. Re-opens this spring. Need to check it out again myself.

Not much info on web-site. Maybe in April when they re-open.
