Morning Hike at Pipestem State Park

Hello,

We may be stopping at Pipestem on our trip south in June and were wondering what would be the best hike for scenery and fun. My wife and I enjoy hiking so a more difficult trail is no problem.

If you have a trail or hiking destination suggestion, please let us know along with an estimated time to hike.

Thanks,

Mike

Though they are not long hikes at all....walk up to the Firetower (on the right as you come into the park) Some gorgeous views from up there, especially if its a clear day. Also...the hike down to the lake is nice....as is the lake itself. (park in the main Lodge parking lot.) You could go to their website, there might be a trail map there. Or just go into the lodge, they will have trail maps at the front desk. Happy hiking!

Just there 2 weeks ago and took a 1 1/2 mile round-trip trail to a great overlook. It is pretty steep and might not be too fun in a lot of heat. Can't recall the name of the trail, but it starts at the top of the gondola and descends to a couple of rocky outcrops. Beneath you is the river and the lower lodge. I am sure you can find the name at the ranger station. Anyway, we really liked it.

carolph, Was your 1.5 mile hike to Heritage Point? We've decided to go to Heritage Point and Bolar Lookout Tower.

Are there any other scenic places we should visit while in the park?

We are probably going to stop at Hanging Rock State Park later in the day to see some waterfalls so we can spend as much or little amount of time here as we want.

Yes, it was Heritage Point. All down-hill to the point (but, of course, all uphill on the return). Although we have been to Pipestem 3 times, we always used it just as an overnight on our way to North Carolina. Plus, it was always too early in the season for the gondola or the lower lodge (Mountain Creek) near the river to be open. So, not sure what those lower trails are like. I suggest you try the park restaurant's mountain trout. They were delicious and according to our waiter, fresh from the stream.

We enjoyed our hike to Heritage Point.

Thanks for the suggestions!

It took us about 60 minutes round trip... we were breathing heavy on the way back ;o)
