Winter visit.

We will be coming through WV on our way from Detroit to Durham, NC. We were hoping for a fun way to kill a few hours and break up the drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well....you stop in Charleston, visit the Clay Center or the Cultural Center at the Capitol. (Clay Center has exhibits, science center and has concerts)

Nice shopping mall in the middle of town...Charleston Town Center Mall. Recently renovated/updated. http://www.charlestontowncenter.com/

And......you could travel on down I-77 and get off at the North Beckley exit, heading to Fayetteville, WV about 25 minutes. Visit the New RIver Gorge area. Drive across the bridge and visit the Canyon Rim visitors center.Well worth it!

You could go to Tamarack. A big arts and crafts/dining/shopping place. They do free concerts every Sunday at 2:00.

I would stay the night in Beckley. It is about 8-9 hours from Detroit...and only about 5 hours on to Durham the next day.

Hotels include Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn and Suites, Courtyard, Quality Inn. County Inn and SUites...and many more. Lots of resturants too...most within walking distance of the hotels.

Hope this helps.

Charleston and Beckley are both great towns, and Beach Lady's suggestions are really good. Tamarack is simply a "must-do."

One other option may be to go just a little south of Beckley to the Glad Springs Resort/ Winterplace Ski Resort. Ski Resorts are a great deal of fun in the Winter, even if you aren't skiing. Plenty of great food, music, and really fun atmosphere. If you are slightly adventurous, the Tubing Park is about as much fun as you can have!. Winterplace is literally 1/2 mile off of Interstate 77. http://winterplace.com/

And the Resort at Glade Springs is beautiful any time of year. http://www.gladesprings.com/

Thanks WVParkfan....as I was writing my posts I thought about Winter Place..but totally forgot to type it in. Yes....They could stop on their way south, you can literally see the ski resort from I-77. They could rent all their equipment and go skiing and/or tubing. Or...simply stop and grab a bite to eat while watching all the others ski...and fall. ;) (note though...Glade Springs and Winterplace are about 12 miles...and 20 minutes apart..not side-by-side)

Family or just adults?

Might check Mardi Gras Casino/Dog Track in Cross Lanes. If traveling down Rt 35 from Columbus you will drive right by it on I 64 maybe ten miles before Charleston.

Halfway point overnight.? Number of motels off the exit plus lodging at the casino.
