Activities for Labor Day weekend 2012

4 families are meeting in Charleston, WVa. this upcoming weekend.

We are looking for family activities for adults and kids (oldest is 15).

I know the big regatta activity no longer takes place. Does anyone know of any other fun activities? Thank you in advance for any recommendations.

All eyes in the state will be glued to the TV set on Saturday afternoon as our only two Division 1 schools play the final football game in their series. Marshall and WVU play at Noon on Saturday, so unless you are watching the football game, you may find yourself in a ghost town.

Here is a link to the Charleston area calendar of events: http://discovercharlestonwv.com/calendar.php

Though it doesn't look like any festivals are taking place, there are still plenty of great things to do. The newly remodeled Cultural Center (State Museum) is an excellent place to spend a few hours: www.wvculture.org/agency/cultcenter.html

The Clay Center has performing arts, a children's science museum, and a planetarium: http://www.theclaycenter.org/

The Farmer's Market is the old train station, and while it has all of the local produce outside, it also includes an indoor area with locally made specialties like salsas, hot sauces, dips, etc. Really eclectic, and something I enjoy during every visit to Charleston. There is also an outstanding Italian Restaurant there called Soho. Definitely worth a visit: http://www.capitolmarket.net/

The local minor league baseball team will be playing their final series of the season during the weekend. It's a great ballpark, very affordable, and a great way to spend an evening or afternoon: westvirginia.power.milb.com/index.jsp…

There is a very nice city park just outside of town (near the airport) called Coonskin Park. Swimming, boating, miniature golf, real golf, fishing, etc. http://www.kcprc.com/coonskin_park.htm

I hope that helps you to get started. Hopefully, one of the locals in Charleston can offer more advice. Good luck, and enjoy your visit.
