Charleston is an urban area, so I'm not really sure what you mean by "outdoor events." There are a few city parks and a minor league baseball team, but this isn't a rural setting. It's a city.

That said, there is a wonderful festival taking place in the greater Charleston area while you are there. It is called "Festivall," and promotes itself as "10 days of Performances, Concerts, and Events all over the City." There are Art exhibits, a parade, a tour of Gardens at the homes on the East End, music, food, etc., etc. It's a neat opportunity to enjoy the art/ music/ creative side of the Charleston Community.

Here is the website for more info: http://www.festivallcharleston.com/

Would have to check schedule for WV Power baseball.

Throughout the summer months they have Friday nights at the Levee. Live and free music. Some weeks are better than others depending on your taste in music. Right across street from riverfront Holiday Inn.

Should be a couple of weekend festivals on the summer calendar. Will have to research for dates.

Multifest and Festiv-All (?)

Multifest is more of an ethnic festival. Little bit of everything Africa, India, Middle East, etc....are all part of it.

Festiv-all is more an artsy gathering. Wine and cheese, blues, jazz events scattered all over town.

Some car shows usually scheduled for summer week ends and something new for this year. A bike week type event.

Will I need a car in downtown Charleston, WV? Taking the train from DC, arrive Friday night, will stay downtown Saturday, and return by train on Sunday am. Are the sights and restaurants of downtown Charleston walkable? By walkable, within 2-3 miles of the downtown hotels?

Yes, Charleston is a fairly walkable city in the downtown area. But....you need to be pretty careful on some streets/areas and I would advise not walking late at night. What hotel are you staying in?, We can tell you some places you might want to eat/drink/shop at if that is what you are looking for. (you will probably need to take a cab from the station to your hotel)

Thanks very much for the info about walking in downtown Charleston, especially the warning about walking late at night. Don't have a hotel reservation yet, but probably will stay in the Embassy Suites or Marriott. Definitely want to visit the state capitol complex, but otherwise looking for suggestions for places to eat/drink/shop.

Embassy Suites and Marriott are just down from each other on Lee St and right across from Towne Center Mall. About a mile and half (maybe less) to the Capitol Complex area. Also check out Capitol Street. Nice area of downtown with shops and resturants. And only about .3 miles or so from Embassy or Marriott. Pies and Pints is a great place to try...gourmet pizzas and beer. Bluegrass Kitchen is great too, but further away on Washington St.
