Ocean Shores- Making the best of it

In August will be spending 3 night with girlfriends. We don't get to see each other much and wanted a beach trip. I was hoping for Manzanita, but we were able to borrow a cabin for free from a friend, so price won out and now we're going to Ocean Shores, sigh. We went to Ocean Shores often when I was a kid and I have been several times as an adult because family friends live there. I've always thought of it as a dreary little place with not much to do. Besides the jetty and the interpretive center (just learned about it!), I am looking for recommendations to make the most of the trip. Where is the best place to take a long beach walk? Without cars? Any easy hikes nearby? Good daytrips-but not too much driving? Other ideas? Thanks!

They have some canals there. Think you can rent some paddle boats of some sort and tour the canals. Nice looking golf course there. Maybe the boat to Westport will be working then. Westport kind of nice little town to walk about.

I don't think there are cars on the beach in August.

Bring a good kite.

You know, Mountuhngirl, these days time is more precious than money for many people. You sound as if you really don't want to be in Ocean Shores. If that is true, maybe you would be better off spending the money and doing what you really want to do, which is going to Manzanita. Of course, your friends would have to agree.

My first reaction was similar to Kalebergs. Your message was you really did not want to go. But how to get others to agree, You could offer free to the other three, you pay. Will be curious what you do.

I too prefer Manzanita, but think with three friends, would do that another time and just go to Ocean Shores. There is the casino

I tend to also agree that you don't really want to go to Ocean Shores but your friends do? In my opinion, this isn't so much a travel question as agroup therapy question: (1) "How can I deal with the disappointment of oing something I don't want to do?" or (2)"How can I tell my friends I'm not going where they want to and still have friends?". Not really a TA problem. Sorry, just my opinion. Good Luck making your decision. Chuck...

I have to agree, Manzanita would be my choice over Ocean Shores. I've never really cared much for Ocean Shores or most of the resort towns on the Washington coast, for that matter.

However, since the room is free--there is always the Quinault Beach Casino just down the road, rent a pedal carriage and ride around town, it's silly, but fun! Maybe go to the arcades and play games like the kids or miniature golf can be very challenging. ;-)

You said that the trip is you and three friends you don't get to see much.

I think that answers your question right there.

Who cares what you do, INVEST in the friendships, make memories with these friends you never get to see... where you are shouldnt even matter if you dont get to see them much. It is afterall just THREE nights.

Hi Phirl,

I didn't know about the canals or the boat to Westport. I will check both of those out, thanks!

Did a little checking on ferry. Guess it is no longer running.

We were in Ocean Shores in Dec. I picked up a few things. One was a Getaeay guide that shows things to do and places to shop. and also a map think from Windermere Realty.

Guide says 23 miles on interconnected canals. Rental boats available at Electric Boat Company 360-289-9356.

we had 4 nights in Ocean Shores. We left after 3. It was constantly raining, but that was Dec. We had our dog and not good for her, unfamiliar room and she could not get out much.

Phirl, your post was a great miniature portrait of a disappointing vacation. The second paragraph read like a haiku.

Four nights Ocean Shores

Left after three

Dog gone.
