Need an immigration lawyer this week

We're in Bellingham for a few days after a visit to Canada. My son (now an adult) was born in Canada to US citizens, but we were questioned at the border for over an hour - apparently he doesn't have the right papers to prove his citizenship. We're quite worried about this, as we're planning a trip to Europe in the spring, and don't want to have any problems getting back in the country when we return.

Can someone recommend a knowledgeable immigration lawyer in Bellingham? There are 9 listings in the phone book (and only one in our home town in Oregon), so I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I think all of the local immigration lawyers are experienced with this issue. Apparently, there is an entire generation of people that were more than likely born in Canada because when their Moms were in labor it was faster to get to the hopital in Port Roberts. They didn't realize until they went to get passports that it created a problem.

I think the bigger problem will be not finding a good one, but one that has the time.

(I'm not a lawyer) but I think if he is under 18 then that makes a difference in how complicated it is. Does he not have a US passport already?

Thanks for the info. He's 27 and has no passport. However, he had no difficulty getting a Social Security card - they looked at his dad's and my birth certificates and agreed he was a citizen, so we didn't realize he might have border problems.

I grabbed the link for passport info:

travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

Hopefully, this will answer more questions. He might want to get a passport card at the same time - it might be easier to use at the border since the place of birth isn't listed.

It might just be a simple thing of "denouncing" one citizenship in favor of another. Is he sure he doesn't want to be a Canadian? (just kidding)

vandan, I think you missed the point of both posts. And they had nothing to do with Canada, per se...
