Romantic things to do/see for new couple in 40's/50's |
|
Hello. We are a couple from NJ and MD, coming to Williamsburg as our first getaway time together during the first week in December, when the Grand Illumination is going on. What else do you recommend we do? Must sees? Romantic restaurants? Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, just a fun place for couples! Thanks for your sage advice. Cinderellie |

Hi, Cinderellie -- As one who honeymooned in Williamsburg, my favorite place, more than 30 years ago, I have to say everything about Williamsburg seemed and still seems romantic to me. Just walking down the street is a joy. But dinner and dancing at the Regency Room at the Williamsburg Inn is very nice. Fridays and Saturdays only for the dancing, although there is music every night. The Inn is both fancy AND expensive. And it is small and has a very loyal following, so at this point it might be hard to get reservations, but boy, in your shoes, I would certainly try!!! :-) Any of the 4 taverns are also great, although they can be noisy and you sit a little closer to your neighbors. You can try for reservations at 2 of them -- Campbell's and Kings Arms. The other two are first come, first served. That is going to be a tough weekend for availability, though. Do try for an evening performance or tour of some kind. The candlelit atmosphere of the town after dark is so special. And you should try to do this RIGHT NOW because of the popularity of the weekend. I presume you know the website, history.org. Click on the calendar to learn what's happening and then speak with the nice reservationists at 1-800-HISTORY. And have a perfect weekend! I think a lot of us out here are grinning ear-to-ear!

My fiance and I live here and one of the things we like to do is take a drive down the colonial parkway to historic yorktown.. it's about a 30 min drive on a tree lined road (we often see deer) that ends at Historic Yorktown which has Yorktown Beach that has pretty sunsets.. there's also a maritime museum there I think, some shops and even a tavern. It's a pretty drive and a nice place to just sit and watch the water. Another thing we like is going to Cheeburger Cheeburger in New Town Shops.. it has an old 50-60's diner feel..with fresh made burgers and any toppings..and old fashioned milkshakes (that you can share), we grab tickets for the theater next door and then walk around the shops, mostly Barnes and Noble, until movie time. If you like sushi, we think sharing a few rolls and saki at Soya Restaurant is really nice, they have romantic lighting with candles on the tables after dark. And you could always check out one of the Ghost Tours.. nothing gets you closer than a friendly scare :) Good luck and we hope you have a wonderfully romantic weekend!

Oh..and I forgot to mention if you guys like the blues, JM Randall's usually has a band, if you like the bar atmosphere.. we've been there a couple times, usually draws a mature crowd since it's blues.

Last one I swear, lol.. But it just dawned on me to mention The Trellis Restaurant. .ever heard of Death by Chocolate? The author Marcel Desaulniers owns The Trellis..only heard great things about it, although, I haven't been there yet since I've also been told it's pretty pricey :)

Hi Cinderellie, Good suggestions from the posters. I agree, Yorktown seems romantic to me. It's so quaint and I have walked down the streets holding my husbands hand. There is a little place called "The Carrot Tree", it's in one of the original homes. You can't miss it, the town is very small. (and very lovely!) It closes early, like 3 o'clock. You might want to check up on that. Oh, they serve lunch, coffee and, of course, carrot cake. The museum is called "The Waterman's Museum". It's down by the riverwalk. Pretty small, but interesting. (Also, the Yorktown Victory Center museum is in that area.) The Colonial Parkway is a beautiful drive. Drive it all if you can, I think it's about 23 miles from Jamestowne Island to Yorktown. Have a wonderful romantic time. (We are a "50's/60's" couple)!

The trellis has gone down hill in recent years. It is nowhere as good as it used to be. It may be worth going for dessert but the meal I had their last month was not good at all and my companions didnt like theirs either.
