3 weeks in Bay of Islands

we will be spending 3 weeks in December in the Bay of Islands. Have rented a flat to use as a home base located in Pahia. does anyone have suggestions for great things to do for day trips?

There is such a long list I wouldn't know where to start - could you let us know roughly your interests & age, then I might be able to narrow down a shortlist of 20 or so !!

hi! Thanks for answering so quickly. my husband and I are 50 and physically fit. we enjoy beach activities, hiking, and would be up to some small cycling day trips if we could rent bikes. be have hired a car and are driving up from Auckland, but as we are unfamiliar with the left hand side driving, we probably won't want to do too much city driving. We would essentially like to see as much of what makes this region unique. we are well travelled and enjoy experiencing the local culture.

Your advice would be most appreciated!

1) Cape Reinga/ 90 Mile Beach day Trip

2) Day in Russell, Flagstaff Hill & Long Beach

3) Take car ferry to Russell and drive down the Old Russell Road to the Cafe & Gallery at Helena Bay - this could also include Mimiwhangata Coastal Park

4) Day Trip to Hokianga and Waipoua Forest - this could also include an overnight to do a night walk to see kiwi

5) Day in Kerikeri (wineries, cafes & Stone Store historic reserve)

6) R Tucker Thompson tall ship experience

7) Dolphin Cruise

8) Taiama Tour trip on a maori waka

9) Day trip around various mission houses and historic sites

10) Ngawha hot pools

11) Wairere Boulders

12) Sand Dunes, Quad Biking etc at Ahipara

13) Twin Coast Cycle trail (bike hire available)

This should give you a few ideas to think about - some of these can be combined together in a full day's trip

This is by no means a comprehensive list, just a few initial ideas

I can give you any web links or other info you need on any of these things

To expand on a couple of Andychef's suggestions:

If one takes the bus trip up to Cape Reinga and IMO thats the best way to experience the Cape Sandtobbaning and the Sand Dune along the Te Paki stream are included as part of the Trip.

The Ngawha hot springs can be included as part of the day trip to Waipoua Forest and visit Tane Mahuta

Depending upon which company is chosen one can go out to the Hole in the Rock and at the same time weather and conditions permitting swim with the Dolphins

Recomend the R Tucker Thompson sailing experience.

Andy offers great suggestions. And one more expansion: the Far North offers the best genuine Maori cultural encounters in NZ. You can consider a variety of options from day trips spending a day with small communities, to jumping into a waka (canoe) and rowing under Haruru falls. Or simply explore Kawakawa, Kaikohe and Kaitaia - seek come advice from the locals though, as there strict Maori protocols on visiting Marae (the heart of a Maori community)
