Bay of Islands

We are travelling to NZ next wk. We arrive in Aukland on the 6th and were thinking of going upto the Bay of Islands thew next day. Is it possible to travel there, see the Bay of Islands and travel back to Aukland in the same day or would we need to stay a night up there? Only have 3 wks in NZ and wanrt to see as much as possible. Any advice would be awesome, thanks!

You can do Auckland - Bay - Auckland in one very long day, but you wouldn't get to see very much of it. I'd allow 2 nights at least so you can do the Cape Reinga trip - you might find that you can do this trip from Auckland - but you'll be exhausted. you're in beautiful New Zealand - no rushing allowed!

Over-night if driving yourselves. Otherwise Great Sights offer a day tour departing Auckland city early morn with arrival back into city approx 8pm. Waitangi Treaty House & Bay cruise included.

Driving to BOI takes about 3.5 hours from downtown Auckland to Paihia. There is much to see, besides a half-day Bay cruise at least. It's the seat of NZ's settlement history for a start, so the BOI is most historic. But with a Bay of 100+ islands, the coastal attractions are varied and glorious. 3 weeks in NZ, the Bay of Islands deserves 1 night at least. As JJones says, 2 nights to allow for a Cape Reinga tour - extraordinary trip to view the tip of the country - and a very spiritual part of NZ.. Cheers.
