best place to stay in Chianti

Hi there =)

My partner and I would like to visit Tuscany next summer and although we want to see the sights of Florence, (without a doubt!) we would like to try something a little different and possibly stay somewhere a little more rural in the Chianti region and just do a day trip into Florence and Siena also.

Greve in Chianti seems like a wonderful place to base ourselves, however we will not have a car, instead replying on public transport. Can anyone advise on the best villas/farmhouses to stay at?

We don’t mind splashing out on a higher-end place, if this helps, however obviously will need be somewhere we can travel to on foot, or is well connected with buses/trains.

Or do you think this is defeating the purpose of staying somewhere rural if we can’t stay too far outside of a town/village? Happy to stay in Florence and do day trips from there if it’s a wiser alternative.

Obviously we are only in the very beginning planning stages of your trip so happy to take any and all advice!!!

Thank you very much

B

A little more rural means having a car. You can manage certain corners of the Chianti without, especially staying around Greve, but it's so much more enjoyable with one, honest.

I've spent months looking at what feels like every possible option for staying in Greve. In the end it came down to two options antico pastificio which is in the middle of Greve itself or Poggio Asciutto which is more rural. As we wanted the "real" Tuscany we've opted for the Poggio and cannot wait.

If you want to explore the countryside of Chianti and the areas near Siena, a car is pretty much essential. Driving in the Tuscan countryside is not difficult.

Thanks guys, I definitely see your point. Maybe hiring a car is the best way as there's just so much to see, as I am discovering more and more each time I do some trip planning!

Much appreciated!

I agree with the other answers, if you really want to discover tuscan countryside a car is essential. I suggest you also to visit Siena and the crete senesi and val d'orcia regions south of Siena.

We booked the apartment Montebeni: greve-in-chianti.com/vacation_apartments_mon…

It is in walking distance to the village. We do have a car but like to walk into the village for coffee or dinner.

Tuscany without a car would not be Tuscany!
