Car hire in Chianti

Hi, we are a group flying into Pisa and staying in Greve in Chianti and I was wondering if car hire is necessary?

Will we need a car to get around places or is the public transport good and could we maybe hire bikes to get around?

If car hire is essential, could anyone provide any recommendations for car hire companies? Also, is it possible to hire cars locally in Chianti rather than having to drive from Pisa?

There is bus service however it is not convenient for touring. I would say a car is essential to get around Chianti. I would also make sure your if you are looking at public transport that the accommodations are within walking distance of a bus stop. If it is not in the Village of Greve itself the commune of Greve is pretty large and many Villas and B&Bs are set quite a ways off the main routes.

Driving in this area is not difficult, and a car is almost essential. The nearest car rental offices are in Pisa, Florence, and Siena.

Check other postings about car rental at the Florence airport; okay to rent FROM there but returning the car can be a nightmare. The rental return is in a parking lot that only lets in a car at a time when it's full, so you have to wait for someone to leave.
