Help! Confused as to which Island to visit.

Hi,

Sorry for the ramble, have been looking at the various forums/websites over the past few days and am now totally confused as to which Island to visit, any suggestions?

We (me and my husband) are in our early 30's and want to visit somewhere which is relaxed, easy to get to, has lots of places to visit and most importantly doesn't suffer from mass tourism.

We plan to spend 7 nights end of June/early July. We would like a good selection of bars/restaurants but would much rather these were local places than designed for tourists.

Would Naxos be a good selection? Many thanks in advance and sorry for being so vague!

Naxos should be right for you. Although being the largest of the Cycladic islands, it is not disturbed by cruise ships docking nor has it an international airport. It has some of the best beaches in Greece, a maounatinous and spectacular interior with many small villages still living the Greek way of life, historical sites and an interesting Old Town besides many choices of bars and restaurants.

Here are some photos and links for you:

Diamond Freddie -- another vote for Naxos, tho jokers on this forum say that we are bringing on those dreaded crowds with our endorsements!

BTW, hee hee, do you sense the contradiction in your wishes? "Somewhere which is relaxed, easy to get to, has lots of places to visit and most importantly doesn't suffer from mass tourism..... a good selection of bars/restaurants but ... local places than designed for tourists." Think about it! Easy to get to, lots of attractions, good selection of bars/restaurants -- yet, magically, no crowds. Ah well, we can dream, can't we?

Since you will be going on edge of high season, staying out at a farther beach will be a good idea. A reasonable place that I like the look of is at the LAST bus stop in Plaka Beach -- it has a large shadey traditional taverna, with apt. units behind; I lunched there while at the beach last June, and liked the look of it a lot! Family-run, the food is from their own local farms, can't get better than that! http://aronisnaxos.com/index%20en.html

There isn't any good selection of bars/restaurants in Plaka - it is too far from town. It is also designed as a resort for tourists.

The town is first and foremost catering for its locals all year around, but in the season you will find more touristy places as well. However, it will be a number of choices for true Greek restaurants and a living town. Look up the albums I linked for you to seer the difference.

Greek-Traveller is certainly right that there is not as much choice of restaurants and cafes at a beach town such as Plaka ... that's why I, like he, stay in Ag. Giorgios (St. George), tho I do go there in May & early June. I was suggesting Plaka with beach-fans in mind. Lots of us stay in St. George and take the bus out to the farther beaches, by day, but are walking distance to town cafes etc in the evening. And one doesn't need to worry about getting back to a far place after a late-ish night.

Hi, We are also very confused about which island to visit, but like you we want peace and quiet, not loads of tourists! We have teenagers, but we don't want busy nightlife, just a few restaurants, and lots of lovely (uncrowded) beaches! Like Cornwall, but warm! From all the advice we've had, Naxos sounds perfect, BUT is it hard to get to? Looks complicated, and we are not seasoned travellers. So, I'm leaning towards Kefalonia because it looks easier to get to? What does anyone think? Thank you!

Kefalonia, like many other Greek Islands, has direct flights from the UK. I've never been there, but my daughter enjoyed her visit. If ease of access from the UK is your priority, that would be a good choice. Kefalonia won't get really busy until schools in the UK and other countries break up, so mass tourism won't be an issue in late June - early July. Suggest you post on the Kefalonia forum for suggestions on best resorts.

Hey and welcome diamondfreddie:-) If you're looking to avoid *mass tourism*, it usually is best to head to the isles that do not offer direct access via the charters/flights..as well as isles that do not have an airport, for the most part! Having said that, if you're looking to fly direct, then your choices are certainly more limited! To get to Naxos, you can always fly to Athens and connect to a flight from there (barely half an hour since there is an airport on the isle used primarily for domestic use!)..or take a ferry over! If you plan for late June, your chances are much better for more 'relaxed';-) Let us know how the planning goes..EnjoY!

Hello Dizzie,

We have been to Kefalonia twice and Naxos 10 times and will be visiting there again this year.

To me this is not a contest whilst Kefalonia is pleasant, it is no match on any front with Naxos.

Whilst some may think it is preferable to have direct flights into an island I feel that as a rule is a reason to try other islands.

There are various ways to get to Naxos. You can fly into Athens and get a boat out to Naxos or , as we are doing you can fly into another island and then transfer. For example we are flying with Thomas Cook into Kos and returning with them from Santorini, booking flights only. Thomsons go into Kosand Mykonos, Easy Jet do as well. Jet 2 fly into Kos and Rhodes.

Naxos is worth the effort I am sure you would like it
