Laguna de Apoyo: San Simian, Hotel Paradiso or Monkey Hut?

Could anyone recommend which of these places is best for their "Day Pass"? They all seem pretty similar but just wondering if any are better than the others for views, access to the lake, quality of chairs, kayaks, hammocks, etc, or with better/cheaper restaurant/bar on site?

The day passes seem to head back to Granada around 4:00 or so - would there be much point to stay overnight in Laguna de Apoyo? Seems like it would be relaxing to wake up on the lake and head to Granada in the morning instead, but I'm not sure that anyone offers a "reverse" shuttle to take you to Granada in the morning.

I spent the day at San Simian a few weeks ago. It was great. Crystal clear water to swim in. They have kayaks, hammocks and inner tubes. The bar served a few things. They had a Greek salad that was a hit with some. The day pass was $5 per person.

I arranged for a taxi to drop me off and pick me up hours later from my Granada Hotel. The driver was waiting and very dependable. If you wanted to stay there, I'm sure they can call a taxi to take you back.

Thanks for the reply! Did a day seem like plenty of time to enjoy the lake? I'm sure it probably gets very quiet there once the sun goes down... can't decide if that would be ideal for the last night of our trip, or if a night in Granada would be a better way to say good bye to Nicaragua... really need to be able to take longer holidays to not have to choose one or the other! :)

Why not make your final night in Granada..easy to get early ride to airport.

Our flight is at 6:30am... I did think about staying in Granada rather than in Managua, but I think we'd have to leave around 3:30 to get to our flight 2 hours early, so might be easier to just be right there.

I stayed for over four hours, which was plenty for me. San Simian is very small, only about 5 cabanas. There were other young "day trippers" who came from a hostel in Granada. We all had fun visiting, swimming. It's not to be missed.

Since your flight is so early, I would recommend heading to Managua late afternoon the day before. I stayed at Camino Real my last night. I had a very nice dinner. There's a Casino with live music adjacent to the hotel also. The hotel has a free shuttle which takes less than 5 minutes to get to the airport.

Your original question re: Laguna spots really depends on what kind of vibe your are looking for. San Simian tends to be quieter while Monkey Hut is more active. Also, just past the Monkey Hut are some fun bars down on the water. San Simian is pretty much at the end of the road so more secluded.

I would personally stay in Granada for the night and leave at 3:30 in the morning vs. staying in Managua because in reality you will not be saving that much time with packing/moving, etc and I have never had luck getting a good nights sleep at the hotels close to the airport in Managua either.

Thanks everyone - what about Apolo Lodge for a night's stay? Seem to be some great reviews here for them.

Yes I am still considering staying overnight... more worried about the taxi not showing up than anything, and a few have mentioned that the road is not very safe since it will still be dark out in the early hours.

How long is the drive to the airport from Laguna de Apoyo?

Apoyo Lodge is going start renting out the full house and not individual rooms later this year for high season... I think we might just head to Hostel Oasis and do their day trip, head back to Granada for the night and off to the airport early morning.

Apoyo Lodge is after the road ends so make sure you have verified reliable transportation to get to Managua. Not the easiest place to get to so I wouldn't really recommend it for a one night stay with an early morning flight unless you are looking for an excuse to stay in Nicaragua longer.
