Thanksgiving in Lynchburg

Family will be camping near Lynchburg over Thanksgiving. Where is good place for Thanksgiving dinner? Also, any suggestions as to places to visit with children?

Thanks for all ideas!

I don't think I can help you much with dinner, (I'd visit restaurant websites that look interesting and see what they have on their website for Thanksgiving)

but there are lots of fun things to do in Lynchburg...

Snowflex tubing on Liberty Mountain http://www.liberty.edu/snowflex/

It won't matter the temperature or if there is snow- you can go tubing any time.

Children must be 5 and up, ages 5 - 16 must be accompanied by parents.

Not sure if it's open Thanksgiving weekend, but the LaHaye Ice Center has ice skating:

If you have young kids you might be interested in the Kids Cove (in case of inclement weather while camping)

Amazement Square is a well beloved hands-on kids museum: http://www.amazementsquare.com/welcome.php

Cinemark offers cheap movie seats ($1.00 - $1.50) in case you get rained out

Master's Inn has horseback riding and paintball (for older kids):

Hiking at Peaks of Otter: virginia.org/Listings/…

Also a link to restaurants where kids eat free with a parent:

I am from PA but will check with my son and daughter-in-law. He's a police officer in Lynchburg so might know what's open on Thanksgiving, but they live towards Appomattox. I always try to find a Golden Corral if I'm near one on Thanksgiving and we love it. There is one in Lynchburg.

Also, they might know some places to visit w/children. They have 4 boys ranging from ages 6-13 :) I know they have done the Liberty Mt. snowflex tubing and the kids loved it! I will write again if I hear of anyplace else!

Here is what she said:

"Probably Golden Corral or any other Buffet style. Also Bob Evans is having a turkey dinner and is right next to G.C. But will probably be less busy. There is the snow flex, Putt Putt Fun Center, Amazement Square, Fort Early. If they want to drive a little towards Roakoke, there is the Peaks of Otter hiking trails (gorgeous views) and the D Day Memorial in Bedford. There is also the surrendering grounds and the Museum of the Confederacy in Appomattox."

I'm on vacation all that week, might head down that way myself ~

Bob Evans just posted their Thanksgiving menu.

We enjoy a meal there every Sunday after church- their turkey dinners are our favorites~

We have met up with family to eat at the Kirkley Hotel in Lynchburg. We really enjoyed it once or twice and the last time was terrible service and some good food, some awful. But it was excellent for a few years, even a pianist one year.

I think Depot Grille is open. Give them a call. They are in the city near the James River just by the railroad tracks. Part of their building includes an old railroad car. There is usually the opportunity to see one train come by whenever we are there. Kids run to the windows. Adults too. Give them a call and see if they're open. 434-846-4464

Natural Bridge on the Parkway has a great Thanksgiving Buffet. Where will you be camping?

If you are on the Parkway in between Lynchburg and Charlottesville you might check opentable.com for 11/28 in Charlottesville. I just took a look at 7 pm and there are a few restaurants available.

You might also check on Milan if you like Indian food. We actually had our dinner on a Christmas there a couple of years ago. Wonderfully quiet and delicious food. (I say 'dinner on Christmas' rather than Christmas Dinner because it's not the usual American stuff....it's Indian.)
