need vacation ideas

HI We want to head to Fa;ls church for Memorial day weekend to eat basically. We ate at few places there that were so awesome we are willing to go back just to eat. We stayed in DC and toured DC several times and do not want to go back to DC.

Falls church besides the restaurants looks a little boring. We do not want to do DC again and Ocean city Maryland is already booked. Any other cities or beaches within an hour or 2 to stay in and tour? We do plan to eat in Falls church so it has to be kind of close.

"Falls church besides the restaurants looks a little boring."

Well...Falls Church is just another D.C. suburb. And when you get out of Falls Church, you are going to be in just another adjacent suburb which you will probably find pretty boring; Fairfax, Chantilly, Annandale, Arlington...and then there is Maryland...SilverSpring, Wheaton, Takoma Park...all around the Beltway they just run one into another. Sure there are some little things to see here and there, but none of them really stand out as a place to stay and "tour".

So help us out here. What do you like to do? Do you want to shop? Are you into Antiques? Do you want to enjoy the outdoors? Do you like Civil War history? How about camping?

You could go out to Harpers Ferry area and tour Leesburg and some VA wineries. You could stay in Old Town Alexandria and visit Mount Vernon and Woodlawn Plantation and the Frank Lloyd Wrigt Pope-Leighy house. You could head down towards Fredericksburg, VA and then over to Colonial Beach on the Potomac. You could go out to Manassas and tour the Manassas Battlefield Natl. Park and the Civil War fort at Mayfield and the Manassas Museum.

Your closest Ocean beaches will be either OC or VA Beach, and 1) those are out of your 2 hours, and 2) will be booked and/or traffic in and out will be awful.

Have you ever explored Charlottesville and central Virginia? It's about a 2.5 hour drive from Falls Church depending on time of day / day of week. It has its own robust selection of excellent places to eat, and also has many wineries in the surrounding country side. There are lots of out-door options like the gardens at Monticello or visiting Montpelier. You can find plenty of details on things to do in Charlottesville / Central VA elsewhere on these forums.

All the above suggestions are excellent. 1 more: Baltimore, MD inner harbor. You could stay at a hotel at the inner harbor and walk around to the restaurants, take the water taxi around, see the aquarium, etc. There are excellent restaurants in the neighborhoods.

Enjoy your trip.
