Do we need a car?

Will be staying at the Residence Inn Fairfax Merrifield Oct.1st for 3 nights. It says the metro is 1 mile from hotel. Is that the subway or bus service? Was wondering if that is the subway can we take that to Arlington National Cemetary, Mount Vernon and into DC. to do some sight seeing? Would rather not drive if at all possible to these places.

Any info would be appreciated.

Yes - Merrifield is one mile from the "Dunn Loring" metrorail (subway) station, near the Beltway. See details at http://www.wmata.com . Suggest you get a hotel shuttle ride to the station, if your hotel offers one - as the station parking lot fills up VERY early on Mon - Fri mornings. You can ride the "Orange Line" route directly from there to the Smithsonians, Capitol, White House, and other major sights without having to change trains. To reach Arlington Cemetery, you will have to change trains at Rosslyn station and ride one short stop on the "Blue Line" route. Mount Vernon is more difficult to reach on public transportation - I suggest you drive there via the Beltway - hopefully at off-peak hours or on a weekend when traffic is lighter.

Thanks MarylandMist for the info. When we go to Arlington Nat'l Cemetary is the tomb of the unknown soldier and gravesite of JFK within walking distance of the cemetary? I see there are other things around the cemetary but didn't know if they are within walking distance of the cemetary.

If your hotel doesn't have a shuttle, unfortunately the walk between your hotel and Dunn Loring Metro isn't terribly pedestrian friendly. The 1C Metro bus does run past your hotel on Gallows Rd. and to the Dunn Loring station. The schedule is irregular, sometimes running less than once an hour: www.wmata.com/bus/timetables/va/01c.pdf

You will want to pick up the bus on the same side of Gallows as your hotel is on. When you retun, it will drop you on the other side of Gallows Rd.

I would suggest if you want a response, to send a private message directly to the OP. They possibly won't see your response to this thread unless they have a request to have a notice of reply emailed to them.

Have you checked the hotel reviews on this site?

marinemom99 unfortunately we didn't get to stay at the Fairfax Merrified last year. We ended up not going but if you read the reviews you will see they are pretty good. We hope to try and stay there maybe sometime this year.

If you stay there hope you like it. Post a review on it.

The tomb of the Unknowns and the JFK grave are inside the cemetery. This website gives you a map so you can see the relative locations of these sites:
