It probably depends on the time of day (rush hour vs. non-rush hour) and how fast you like driving. I drive fairly slow (I drive the speed limit & avoid all rush hours) and so it takes me about 2 1/2 hours on Route 29.

If you're looking for a slow scenic drive during the day, there's the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park (just slightly west of Route 29). You shouldn't plan on going more than 25 or 30 mph, but it's gorgeous & there are places to stay overnight (Skyland Resort & Big Meadows Lodge). http://www.nps.gov/shen

Your best bet for April travel would be to plan to drive directly to Charlottesville. If the weather is one of our sparkling spring days, then you could drive a portion of the way on the Skyline Drive and enjoy the vistas from atop the Blue Ridge.

If its a cloudy day, then you would encounter long expanses of dense fog on the Skyline which is a curvy road with few guard rails. You would not want to be committed with reservations at one of the lodges on the Skyline on a day like this. And you could avoid this road by taking US 29 directly to C'Ville.

Since you are making plans 6 months away from halfway around the globe, why risk 1 to 2 miserable days of driving on the wrong side of the road in the fog!
