Foliage in Mountains Near Blacksburg

We are planning a motorcycle trip that will include 2 nights in Blacksburg, 10/10 & 11. Can we expect to see foliage or will it be too early? We'll be staying at the Holiday Inn so any suggestions of "must do" things during our visit would be greatly appreciated. How about a great local restaurant or dive bar?

Dear pahhobbs.

I actually live near Charlottesville VA but am a graduate of VT and my son currently is in school there. The dates you are going to be there is a little early for most dramatic changes in the foliage but you will see some. Plus it's been so dry and hot this year a lot of the leaves will turn brown and drop so it might not be a great year for the usually spectacular change in colors found in SW VA.

While you are there, try and hike the Cascades. You can check it out on http://gilescounty.org/cascades.html . It is so beautiful and very worth the time.

A great place eat/hang out is Bull and Bones Brewhouse and Grill, you can check them out at www.bullandbones.com on South Main St. It's a VERY popular place but you can call head before you head over an get on the waiting list. They serve warm soft pretzels and mustard rather than bread and they are to die for. Try one of their beers...also excellent.

Another local favorite is the Farmhouse in Christiansburg (very close to Bburg...next town over). An old favorite of anyone that's attended Tech. They have great food.

Walk around VT's campus. It is a beautiful campus. Have a great time, it's a beautiful part of our state!!
