Hello, I am from Boston, and want to spend a long weekend at an B & B in Monetpelier for my anniversay at the end of September. Any suggestions on nice, romantic, clean Inns, restaurants and things to do in the area would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

I've never stayed in an Inn in Montpelier but there are several nice restaurants that you should check out. First is the Black Door. It's on Main Street between the Savoy movie theater and a video store. It's awesome, traditional, American food. Second is Julio's on State Street. Very popular with the locals. It's a fun Mexican restaurant. Great place for a drink and some nachos. Third is Conoshenti, next door to Julios, this is a classy little Italian place. It's a little spendy but very good food. One of the few places to get canoli in central vermont. Forth is Sarducci's. For most people, this is the best restaurant in town. Really great italian food. Wood fired oven for pizzas. Very popular with the locals. It's not unusual to see the Governor or another notable citizen having dinner here. Try to get a table on the deck. Fifth is -- um -- the Indian Restaurant on Main Street, across the river (on the other side of route 2). the atmosphere in this place could not be worse. But if you like Indian food, you'll like this place. Sixth is Positive Pie -- some great pizza and some fun people. For coffee don't miss the Langdon Street Cafe. This place really captures what Montpelier culture is all about. Great music at night and great conversation anytime. Don't miss Bear Pond Books. It's a great little bookstore. And across the street is Rivendell Books -- a wonderful used bookstore. Take a walk along the rec path -- and what is the name of that awesome park up the hill behind the statehouse???? You have to go there. It's great. Also, take a walk up East State Street to the campus of Vermont College. There isn't anything to DO there but the campus is really beautiful. Go up Route 12 a couple of miles and you can swim in the resivoir. Go up Rout 12 for 35 minutes and visit Elmore (this is one of the most beautiful drives in the state). Hike Mount Elmore, swim in Lake Elmore and get a snack at the Elmore Store. Take a drive up to Maple Corners. There isn't anything there. But the foilage should be nice that time of year. Take a guided tour of our statehouse. Go to the Cabot Creamery. That's close by. Drive over to Marshfield on Route 2 and get a treat at Rainbow Sweets. Have a great stay in VT. Montpelier is one of my favorite places on the planet.

From memory there are not alot of Bed and breakfast choices (in the romantic catagory anyway) in Montpelier. Last time I was there we stayed at the Inn at Monpelier. its quite large and not "really" a B&B but has a pretty central location, has some character, friendly staff and the rooms were nice. We were on a budget so stayed in a standard room - but from memory they have three rates. The standard room was lovely so I expect the high end ones may fit the bill.

I have been to the Montpelier area twice recently. I've got a friend who bought a farmhouse in Plainfield, but I prefer not to be a houseguest there, so I've been shopping around for lodging. The first time, I stayed at the Marshfield Inn & Motel on Route 2E in Marshfield. It was great! Also nearby was the Hollister Hill Farm which seemed very inviting, definitely someplace I would go in the future if I wanted to stay at a B&B. On my second trip, I deliberately went to a chain hotel because I knew that I would be arriving in the middle of the night and didn't want the hassle of disturbing my host and fellow guests. I chose the Comfort Inn in Montpelier. It was clean and attractive, but otherwise unremarkable. The rooms were small, parking was difficult, too many guests were grabbing for breakfast at once, and the facility had no swimming pool. On the plus side, it had a very convenient proximity to I-89 and the staff was very courteous.
