I am debating on splurging for one night at the Von Trapp resort instead of including a hotel in my expedia package. Here are my questions:

-if I decide to stay in Burlington we need a suite hotel (3 adults) - any recommendations?

-is the Von Trapp worth the additional $$

- should we just try and have a meal or tea there? (My daughter is a HUGE Sound of Music fan)

Depends on what you're looking for. Von Trapp is in Stow, about an hour's drive from Burlington. If you stay in Stowe, you've got the amenities of a very ritzy, high-priced resort town. (Expensive stores and restaurants for tourists and wealthy residents.) It's definitely not representative of most of VT.

In Stowe, you're not far from Montpelier, which is a more informal small city and the state capital.

The Von Trapp itself has occasional concerts (VT Mozart Fest, you'd have to check the schedule, though) and lots of good hiking in the mountainous woods surrounding the property. The food is very good, and the rooms are quite luxurious.

If you want a more urban experience (though the word "urban" is a stretch) Burlington offers the lake, various visual and performing arts venues, lots of good restaurants, a bike path, a very nice lake science center (ECHO) for kids (although adults enjoy it too), and of course the University of Vermont.

I can't think of suite hotels in the city, but if you look up Williston (about a 10 minute drive) you'll find a number of them.

I believe Comfort suites on Shelburn Rd Burlington have two rooms suites - its not the Von Trapp Family lodge but the location is ideal and its a lot less expensive!
