Park City in October...Weather and Activities?

A group of us are planning a girls' weekend in October, but we're not skiers. Is the weather still nice enough for hiking, rafting and other outdoor activities? Any recommendations? Thanks!

Hi Jeanne, if you're around in early October you will likely be in for a treat of fall colors. You could head over Guardsman Pass and check out the Alpine Loop on the backside of MT. Timpanogos or head into Big Cottonwood Canyon for a challenging but rewarding half day hike to Lake Blanche or short walk around Silver Lake's boardwalk. It should still be nice weather at the beginning of the month.

Later in the month will be a lot cooler. You'll likely need a coat for walks outside. There could be snow, but there might not be much. Each year is so different. I've seen it snow 70 inches in Oct but some years are bare.

You might get great deals on accommodations in the shoulder season. The town won't be as hopping as summer it winter though. Also check the local magazines and papers for half-off dining coupons that the locals use during the off seasons.

You could check into Utah Olympic Park and the bobsled run and zip lines. Canyons has mountain biking, Red Pine Gondola and zip lines. There is a ghost tour with a lot of local history. PCMR might still be running the alpine slide and coaster. Great spas from St Regis, Montage and Waldorf. It is likely too late in the season for rafting, but you could alway contact an operator on the Weber River. There are companies like All Seasons that specialize in outdoor excursions. Also might want to check out the crater at The Homestead in nearby Midway for swimming. Hot air balloon rides are likely an option as well.

There should be plenty to do for a weekend and Salt Lake is nearby if you are here longer. Antelope Island on the Great Salt Lake would be fun to watch the annual buffalo round up, if you're around that weekend. If not, take a tour bus from SLC and see the buffalo, antelope, and birds for an afternoon. You could have a great mix of outdoor activities and fine dining. Check out the High West Distillery among others.

There are also a couple of event calendars to check back closer to the time you'll be around including the ones on visitparkcity.com and cityweekly.net.

Nice time to visit weather wise, but most summer activities are winding down or closed. Earlier in month certainly better. Fall color peak is in first week or two so good time for hikes and drives. You won't be doing much rafting that time of year. Risk of snow is low, but can happen but wouldn't worry about it. This coming October the weekends of Oct. 3-5 or 10-12 would be your best choice.

Have fun.

I agree, Utah Pro Fly Fishing is the best company to do a private fly fishing tour with! If you all want to do any hiking, biking or river rafting, Exclusive Excursions, www.parkcityactivities.info, is the company to go with! The weather and leaves are beautiful in October!!

Hi, we consider PC our second home (we have a vacation rental) and I have explored all seasons there - besides being an avid skier, we LOVE October - best season to go. Temps can be between 50-75 degrees, stunning fall colors, nice crisp air in the morning, no bugs and tourists - beautiful. Perfect time of year - terrific for hike/bike/spa/shop - check-out some of the Meet-up groups out there...very fun! Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions

Personally, my favorite time of year in Park City. Here's a few links that might help you better plan your trip to Park City.

Here's an overall link on Things to Do in Park City.

This is a link to last year's fall list of activities, but some good ideas. The aspens are usually beautiful that time of year.

Park City scenic drives are a favorite in the fall. Plan an hour drive, or spend the day on one of the mapped Park City scenic drives from Park City to our surrounding communities, including Sundance Resort.

Have fun and let us know if we can help with anything else.
