The road to Buckskin Gulch

Hi, just wondering if anybody here knows the condition of the road leading to Buckskin Gulch, probably the Wire Pass section. We want to do an easy-ish day hike so not going the entire length.

I know it's a dirt road leading to it, but is the condition of the road fairly good for a normal road car, or does it require 4x4?

This will be in mid-September so hopefully dry!

Thanks!

It's usually fine for a normal road car. It can get ruts if a lot of people drive it after it's been wet. Seems like more people do that because of the very hard to get Wave permit. Don't want to miss their opportunity. If it's dry you should be fine.

There's quite a few visitor centers in the area and they all share information. Depending on where you are the day or night before they can tell you the road condition for the day.

You want to worry about rain the day before and any rain within 50 miles.

Thanks DannyS, we'll be staying in Springdale for Zion, so will be watching the forecast & seeing what's in the area rain wise.

The visitor center in Kanab is the closest and has the best information.

Just wondering if anybody has been down here recently? We heading here next week and have just seen the warnings and closures around zion. If its wet/bad road conditions we'll skip it and hike in bryce for the day.

Here is the BLM's latest road report. Not really enough information. I personally would call the BLM field office in Kanab for the latest info if you're really keen on Buckskin. Ask them about latest weather forecast too.

Thanks for that. Will give them a ring when we get to zion, but will most likely hit bryce now! We're flexible either way.

That report changes each day as they make road repairs. The damage to House Rock Road is caused by Buckskin Creek flowing over the road and making a giant mud pot. A week ago the by-pass around the creek was open to four-wheel drive.

Heavy rains were Monday and Tuesday this week.

Once again, every visitor center has this road report updated each day. However, this is a BLM report and if you're in a National Park its a NPS visitor center. Just to add to the confusion, just outside Bryce Canyon NP on Highway 12 is an area called Red Canyon. The visitor center there is the U.S. Forest Service.
