First time in Dallas with family

We are visiting the Dallas area for the first time with our 2 kids ( 6 and 9) in late February ( 4 nights). We are from Massachusetts - the trip is part of my grand plan to gradually explore our great country with my children - open their minds to new places, cultures and climates. We are open to stay in any town in Dallas/Fort Worth area - a safe, centrally located town close to places to see, some children activities - and representative of Southern hospitality and Texas flavor!

Any advice is appreciated.

Grapevine seems to cater to the family. Hotels,Retaurants and Attractions. Centrally located but you will need a car. Grapevine Railroad runs to the Fort Worth Stockyards. I will leave suggestion links.

The Fairmont has just renovated their south tower - it has a nice central location and is walking distance to Arts District (you'll find our museums are kid friendly) and Klyde Warren Park. Plus the McKinney Ave Trolley picks up a block from The Fairmont.

Don't forget to check out the new Perot museum in downtown Dallas. But be sure to purchase tickets early, it seems to sell out pretty quickly during school breaks.

Staying in downtown Dallas may disappoint you. It's a great city, but doesn't feel especially "Texas".

Grapevine is a good choice for a location that would let you explore Forth Worth and Dallas. I'd also consider staying in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth is very family friendly, so explore the possibilities there, particularly The Stockyards, Museums, Zoo, Botanical Gardens. With the exception of the museums, these are all outdoors, but our Feb is supposed to be warmer than normal. As I write this (5:15pm), it's 71 degrees.

About an hour SW of Fort Worth, Dinosaur Valley State Park "contains some of the best preserved dinosaur tracks in the world". I have read to call ahead to verify the the river level is low for best viewing of the tracks. tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/dinosaur-valley
