planning for next summer

We just came back from Cancun three days ago, and I am always craving more travel as soon as I get home! I have to admit this time though, we broke the piggy bank this year and I think we need to plan our trip closer and cheaper next year. The main reason we have done the all-inclusive trips for the past 3 years is that I already knew for the most part what our cost was, and all I had to worry with cash was our souveniors and tips. We have never taken our kids down to Schlitterbaun before, we did San Antonio a couple of times and had a great time. My main question is, if we were to do Schitterbaun and wanted to go back to San Antonio, where does anyone suggest that we stay at. I'm thinking a nice but affordable hotel, I don't want to rent a condo or anything that would probably force me to cook and do all kinds of "unvacation" things! I just think it takes so much more work to plan a vacation around Texas when they have such nice all-inclusive vacations in Mexico and beyound! Why doesn't the US get on the band wagon and offer such accomodations? I'm telling you, the hardest part of our trip is going through customs!

I like the Holiday Inn Express in Selma. Selma is between San Antonio and New Braunfels, it's on the I-35, but set back off the road so it's quieter.

As far as all-inclusives....Club Med has a property in Florida

Many folks, like myself and family, enjoy stumbling upon great local restaurants and drinking establishments as part of the experience. Being locked into an all-inclusive resort, for us, always takes away from the experience of really meeting the locals in their own eateries away from the tourist crowd. But, to each his own.

As far as SA is concerned, what are you looking for in location? Do you want something close to Schlitterbahn and drive into SA or do you want to stay on the Riverwalk and drive to New Braunfels? Want something in between? The options are many. Give us a little more information.

I'm thinking not staying in SA, closer to New Braunfels/ Schlitterbahn and possibly getting two day or year pass, if it is worth the money. The kids and my husband love waterparks, we went to Galvestons back in 2006. If we got the pass we would probably go back, we live in east texas so not too bad of drive. Want something in between? I would also consider this. I feel like we would wany to stay closer to New Braunfels since we have done the riverwalk thing a lot. Also, I know there are a lot of options in the hill country besides SA. Any suggestions would be great. The kids will be 14 and 12 next year.

Don't get me wrong, I love Texas and would go for another vacation here. My husband has fell in love with the all-inclusive vacations primarily because he doesn't have to drive (he broke his pelvis several years ago and needs to get out of the car every couple of hours to stretch!)and he can enjoy his beer without having to worry about driving!

Let me suggest staying in Gruene. It is a 5 minute drive to Schlitterbahn just north of New Braunfels. You can stay at Gruene Mansion Inn, The Gruene Apple, or a myriad of other locally run hotels/B&B's. We always stay with relatives so I have no personal experience staying at any of the properties but the area is very nice, walkable, with lotsa shops and restaurants, and Gruene Hall, of course. Here are some of your choices.
