8 days in Houston with 2 little kids; what to do?

Hi everybody,

We are big America fans and love to shop, go to theme parcs, go sight seeing and visit the typical American things (we've been to Orlando, Miami, L.A, New York, Dallas, San Diego and San Fransisco). Next may we've decided to go Houston (our cruise leaves from Galveston) and we really want to know what are the thing we really need to do??

Our party is made up by 3 adults and our 3 year old son and 1 year old daughter. We are staying for 8 days and would like to stay in the same hotel for those days.

I am really looking forward to your advise!!

greetings from cold and snowy Holland

Even though downtown is more central I would stay in the Galleria area. You have the childrens museum (plus all the other museums such as art, science), the zoo. Some of the free things: Miller outdoor, Menil collection, Rothko Chapel, Story telling at the Library, Discovery Park, Old Mac Donald Farm (a petting zoo train rides etc.).

Not that kid friendly, you have NASA, tour of a brewery, maybe a baseball game, a tour of the port (free) by boat, might be too much for the little ones, but a day trip to one of the Presidential libraries (Johnson in Austin is free) and maybe a waterpark.

Then of course shopping at the Galleria and maybe a visit to Chinatown and aslo to The Woodlands.

I am sure othes will add to the list - so you should have several options to choose from.

Consider spending a couple of days in Galveston prior to your cruise. Have a look at the Moody Gardens website--lots of water related fun things for the whole family. You can also go to the beach, but be advised that it will not be the white sand, really blue water beach experience you probably had in Miami.

As you put things together, plan a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. It will be hot here in May and you won't want to be outside all day long. For example, the zoo and the natural science museum are both located in Hermann Park. Go to the zoo in the morning for a while, and then head over to the museum to visit the walk-through butterfly exhibit--great for kids. There is a small train that runs through the park so you could ride the train between these two places. (Train is perfect for a 3 year old.)

Houston is a very big city like Dallas. To help us advise you can you tell us where you stayed in Dallas last year and what things you enjoyed seeing while you were there? Also, how did you get around in Dallas?

You will also need advice on how to get to Galveston from your Houston hotel I am assuming???

Thanks

Hi,

TA reviews are great for this hotel:

tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g56003-d608401-…

It is easy to get to the freeway from this location, and the extra amenities here would be great for the family; always nice to have some drinks and snacks, or breakfast foods on hand in your hotel fridge!

This is a good website for finding things to do in Texas cities and areas. Note the Children's Museum of Houston on theis page; it's a really fun day for the family!

fun-things-texas.com/things-to-do-in-houston…

Love the Zoo too, be sure to get there in the morning, if the weather is warm, say in the 70's. If it's cooler, wait til about 11am, when it warms up a bit, and the animals come out to eat and play.

One of the best places to eat for you all might be Barnaby's, there are a few locations:

www.yelp.com/biz/barnabys-cafe-houston-2…

the restaurants are named for the beloved owner's sheepdog. The portions are large, and there are great burgers, fries, sandwiches, salads, and much more. Try their fresh strawberry lemonade, too!

Hope you all enjoy Houston!

cc,

Cupcake

Your kids are too young to be interested in NASA--go if you are , but not for the kids. Same for museum of fine arts. Suspect the last post is self-advertisement; will report.
