Free Things to do for two in their 20's

My friends just moved to Katy (outside of Houston) and are on a really tight budget for the first few months. What are some free things they could do in the area? Last weekend they went to a Nature Center, but I think that's all they've done so far. Thanks!

Do they like live music. The Continental Club has a free show at either 6:00 or 7:00 on Friday nights - Molly & the RIngwolds. Next door is tacos-a-go-go -- good and cheap.

Live music is actually a great thing to do in Houston, but there's almost always a cover. Occasionally, on the weekdays, there will be free shows for decent bands, but it'll be hard to get Downtown from Katy and back at a reasonable time.

Not free, but only $5 and a really good time is the Saint Arnold's Brewery tour every Saturday at 1pm. Free tastings at the end. On that note, they could also drive out to Shiner and take that brewery's tour, M-F 11am-1:30pm.

There's also antiquing on Westheimer or 19th Street (you don't have to buy anything, it's just fun to look), thrift store hopping, going to the parks in the area, or just driving around. I drove around a lot in college. Houston's so expansive that you never really run out of places to go.

Are they interested in art? Houston has some museums that are free (the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Menil Collection, and others) and others that are free on specific days (the Museum of Fine Arts is free on Thursdays, for example).

Also, admission to the Houston Zoo is free on certain holidays; the next one is the day after Thanksgiving.

People watching is also fun. You can compare people shopping at Katy Mills Mall and the Houston Galleria. On Saturdays, and some places on Sundays, just go antique and clothes shopping along Westheimer Drive. You can park along the side streets and just take a look. You can also try some of the interesting places to eat such as Paulie's, Empire Cafe, Agora, Cafe Brasil's, also there's a brand new cupcake place.

From The Grand Parkway in Katy take the West Park Tollway to the Sam Houston Tollway, go south to Bellaire street and you are entering "New China town". Along this street you have around a 4-5 mile stretch of shops, restaurants and asian malls. Very interesting shopping or just looking. Excellent tea shops for inexpensive drinks. Great eating for budgets as well.
