Hi visiting from Australia. We will be in Fort Worth from morning of Monday 17th Nov and leave on Sat 22nd lunch time.

WHAT ARE THE MUST DO THINGS in the area?

We are into Horses and the environment. Not so much into zoo, art etc.

Is it worth driving to the Alamo for a day trip?

We will definitey do teh stockyards and Billy Bobs.

Would love to see a high school football game but am having triouble finding dates and so on.

Is the Billy Bob rodeo on mid week?

Thanks for your help.

Raina

San Antonio and the Alamo are not really a day trip- you are talking about 5 hours. Would at least plan an overnight, if not 2 days.

Billy Bob's does not have a rodeo- just bull riding Friday and Saturday night. The Stockyards Rodeo is for real and is also Friday and Saturday night.

(I would usually include websites but am writing from London!)

The trouble with high school football that late in November is that they are in the playoffs so no one will know yet who is playing. Check the local papers (Fort Worth Star Telegram and Dallas Morning News when you get here).

Raina,

If you would like to drive about 45 minutes south to Glen Rose there is a wild animal park there called Fossil Rim http://fossilrim.org/ which is very enjoyable. It makes for nice day trip as you can drive through the park and enjoy the animals in a natural setting. Afterward on the way back to Ft Worth, stop in Granbury and have lunch/dinner on the square http://www.granburytx.com/.

Definitely not a trip to San Antonio. Too far for a day trip.

Billy Bobs is alright but definitely one of those things you only need to do once. Walk through Stockyards and have dinner at Joe T's http://www.joets.com/ fajitas and margaritas!!

The last post about football is correct and you may have problems with tickets but it's worth looking into when you are closer URLs for Star-Telegram and Morning News http://www.star-telegram.com/ and http://www.dallasnews.com/

Enjoy!

You may like to go to Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, about 30 minutes from Fort Worth. They have American Quarter Horse racing in November.

I agree with previous poster about Fossil Rim, great place! They have Dinosaur Tracks in Glen Rose as well.

The Omni Theater in Fort Worth is fun, and it's at the Museum of Science and Natural History.

www.fortworthmuseum.com/home/index.html

It's not your typical museum!

Sounds like you would really like the Fort Worth Nature Center. See http://www.fwnaturecenter.org/

Great fun and food at Joe T Garcia's, Uncle Julio's, Pappasita's - all Mexican food restaurants in FW.

You may want to spend a day at the local amusement park, Six Flags over Texas. They will have all the Christmas decorations out. It's a fun way to spend a day and catch the holiday spirit. They have lots of rides for all types of adventure and nice holiday shows as well.

Check out the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens. It's a beautiful park just west of downtown FW.

http://www.fwbg.org/ The Japanese Tea Gardens are definitely worth the price of admission, and don't forget your camera. The leaves should be beautiful while you are here.

I hope you have a great time in Texas!

If you have time before you leave Saturday, the National Cutting Horse Association Futurity starts Nov. 22 at 8am. You may find it interesting since you are into Horses. It is at Will Rogers Equestrian Center not far from in Cultural district in Ft. Worth. nchacutting.com/ag/shows/futurity_home.php

You might also want to take in the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in the same area.

I 2nd a burger at Kindaid's and Mexican food at Uncle Julio's or Mi Cocina or Fuzzy's Taco Shop.

The stockyards is a nice afternoon and then you can catch the rodeo and Billy Bob's while you're up there. Have a beer at the Love Shack and check out the best Texas Art collection in the world next door at the Bull Ring-it's not your usual art collection and their downstairs is very cool, if you ask nice sometimes you can get a personal tour-have an ice cream while there or a cheap beer or both!

Downtown Ft Worth is Sundance Square and has some nightlife as well as some shops.

Find some live music while you're in town.

You can take the TRE train to downtown Dallas if that interests you, it's a very affordable train ride and then you can cab around downtown or the surrounding area.

Hope you enjoy your trip!
