hip urban neighborhoods

We are looking to visit Nashville in the spring and we are looking for a few hip urban neighborhoods to visit during the trip.

Our interests are wine bars, galleries (photography and art), antiques, thrift/vintage, used books, ethnic and vegetarian dining. The less big box stores or national chains, the better.

We also tend to like neighborhoods where the locals live close enough to walk to the "hip" areas so something where everything is centralized and walkable would be great.

Thanks for the help!

Well the whole walkable-from-your-residence thing is fairly new in Nashville. To a large extent living in urban areas simply wasn't possible 10 years ago. Urban-ish areas (old streetcar neighborhoods) were somewhat blighted and the commercial opportunities were not the quaint vista you are envisioning. It's still that way in some areas. But, there's plenty to choose from now; just be aware you're looking largely at re-gentrified areas or formerly all-commercial areas, with all that that entails.

A lot of the specific things you mention wanting are not necessarily in these enclaves, BTW.

Hillsboro Village (always has been and still is)

The Gulch

12South

Berry Hill (N of Thompson Lane across from 100 Oaks)

Germantown(N of downtown)

Areas of East Nashville, particularly the Five Points area and the W Eastland / Chapel intersection, also parts of Fatherland and Lockeland

Also of interest: Avenue of the Arts, particularly on First Saturdays (nashvilledowntown.com/play/first-saturday-ar…)

Note: TA always links "Germantown" to the suburb of Memphis. Ignore the link.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response. We will be driving into town and will check out each neighborhood.

Thank you for the link about the neighborhoods too. I have a lot of planning to do before our trip!

TFerrell is spot on; great suggestions! And there's an app on the iPhone that's called Essential Nashville or something close to that, and it's very helpful. Divides things up into neighborhoods and gives additional suggestions. Have fun!

It's not in any kind of hip neighborhood, but it's close to them, but if you like Indian food, check out Woodlands Restaurant on West End Avenue. It's right off of I-440.
