PearlBob...

I read your reply about Memphis burgers, I've got a question about Memphis BBQ. We were there in August '05, and did our own little BBQ tour. We ate at 4 or 5 places on Beale Street (Silky's, something Palace Cafe, and our favorite, Blues City Cafe), Rendezvous was closed that Labor Day Sunday and Monday, but I got a pulled pork sandwich at the Redbirds game from the Rendezvous concession stand. We also went to Central Ave. BBQ which was really solid. Any other recommendations? I've had Corky's before when I lived in Knoxville, so we can skip that. How is that Interstate place I've heard about? Thanks in advance! Any one else want to throw out some ideas, you're more than welcome!

Some of the best places for BBQ are in not-so-good areas of town, such as Interstate. Interstate is quite a drive, heading down to the casinos. It is pretty famous BBQ though. I would go during the daytime hours if you go, just to be on the safe side.

The BBQ Shop on Madison is in a good part of town and is very, very good. (near Madison and McLean). Great service there too, the wait staff really care and are extremely friendly.

I believe the same family that owns Interstate is the Neely family, which owns the Neely BBQ chain (please correct if I am wrong, someone). There is a Neely's on Jefferson outside of downtown, which is pretty good. Big lunch crowd from the downtown businesses.

Cozy Corner is a REALLY shady place but has some of the best in town. Only open during the day (probably for the best). Closes at 5pm. HUGE lunch crowd from the downtown businesses. And there are only about 15 tiny tables inside, so they do a lot of to-go business. On the outside it looks like it's a run-down building, has a gravel lot, but you'll see the smoke billowing out the roof from the pit. I would suggest getting it to-go, maybe go in, order, wait (only a few minutes) and take it to Tom Lee Park on Riverside Dr. to sit in the grass and have a picnic.

People say the Commisary in Germantown is good, however if you are staying downtown and want things nearby, don't go...it's a long drive.

You were probably thinking Kings Palace on Beale. Rum Boogie has okay BBQ sandwiches. The Pig on Beale has good sandwiches.

Rendezvous is okay but in my opinion, has become too snotty. The service is bad because they know they'll get a ton of business no matter what (they don't need your tip). It's overpriced, so-so food, and you don't get much. Crowded all the time. To me, it's just not worth it. I've taken many out of town guests there and no one really likes it, or at least they all say, "well it was okay." To me, I don't want to shell out a lot of money for 'okay' food. The Rendezvous's BBQ nachos at the ballgames ARE to die for though!

I swear by The Commissary but don't recommend it often on this site because of its location (Germantown). Many travelers are staying downtown or at the Heartbreak Hotel and if they do not venture out east, it probably isn't worth it to drive to the Commissary.

The BBQ nachos at the Commissary are the absolute best (imho). Have never had the ribs but my family seems to really love them! They also have incredible banana pudding!

i've written a ton about how I hate the Rendevoux and it's never been erased, to my knowledge. I, along with others, have also written negative things about Memphis politics, educational system, and the crime here.

the only things that have been erased are things that are racist or prejudiced and that make a mockery of certain races here in town (mainly black). there is no place for that on this forum. People can write their opinions, but they should not be allowed to do so in a deragatory manner or in a way that puts down certain types of people. I applaud tripadvisor for sticking by their guidelines and not allowing that BS on here. This is a forum to help people, not anger people and belittle them.

BBQ nachos?!?!?!?! Darn, something I missed while in Memphis--sounds so good, too!!!!

What I don't understand is why people who hate Memphis stay there. I'm not exactly crazy about where I live (Montgomery, AL), but if I hated it like some people here sound like they hate Memphis, I would find a way to move!!

If you get transferred to a city you don't like for career purposes, that doesn't mean you have to stay!! Jobs are a dime a dozen.

Also, I didn't say I didn't like Montgomery, I just said I wasn't too crazy about it--there's a difference! It's a place worth visiting, and I would tell anyone that. I sure wouldn't bash it like I hear people doing about Memphis. We have lots of history here, nice restaurants, good shopping areas here and nearby.

To quote one of my favorite Sheryl Crow songs, "It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you have." Bashing where you live doesn't help anyone, it only enforces the negative attitude you have and passes it on to the person you're talking to. Being honest helps, but there's a big difference between honesty and negativity.

I really appreciated the advice and honesty I got from people before we visited Memphis. Would I go back again?!?!?!?! In a heartbeat!!!

Tiger...then why don't you stick to posting about Kentucky. You made your point -- we all get it...you don't like Memphis. You're beating a dead horse now.
