No apology needed. :)
There has been plans (albeit very slow) to clean up the Whitehaven area for the last couple of years. (I think I recall reading that businesses were to be given some type of tax break if the located in that zip code). However, with the messy politics we have in Memphis, the regrowth of that area has been very slow. However, with the proposed plans the new owner of EPE has suggested, I do feel that it will have a positive impact on Whitehaven area as a whole. I hope it does. And for what it is worth, it truly embarasses me to see that area so rundown given that Graceland is top U.S. attraction.
With that being said, it is my personal opinion that there are other areas of town that will enable a tourist (and any Elvis fan for that matter) to fully grasp the total "Memphis experience" and better represent the good qualities of our city.
Memphis has so much to offer and it astounds me sometimes that folks want to come here just for Graceland. Of course, that is fine. And in those situations, it is probably best that they stay across the street, if indeed, the only place they wish to visit is Graceland (and as long as they are aware it is not the best area to stay in - in my opinion). But if tourists are interested in seeing other sites - then I suggest other areas for lodging - based on that reason as well as the "crime factor" - something I would hope another TA member would do for me.
I am glad you enjoy coming down here!
