Self-catering for one

Still planning week without car and leaning towards Stornoway as base now and taking day tours etc. Looking for small studio/efficiency in town itself. Search seems to be turning up larger places for larger groups. Any suggestions?

You will be surprised Many hotels are open on Sunday now and there are very good food deals around. The Caladh Inn does a Sunday lunch for less than £10.

Hi Avoca. Airport bus versus taxi at Stornoway depends largely on where your B&B is. A combination of both might turn out cheapest: i.e. bus to town centre, then taxi to B&B.

Best plan on a Stornoway Sunday is to go for a nice long walk!

On Barra, the buses are good, and if you simply want to have a look around, a circular bus ride around the island will take you to most places - and if there's somewhere you like the look of, you can always hop off and continue on the next bus. Arm yourself with a timetable and this should work fine.

Make sure you take a bus across to Vatersay - it's a lovely trip and a different and even more peaceful place, with two of the finest beaches you see anywhere.

Have a great trip!

Thanks to both of you. Looking forward to trip and will take note of beaches on Barra and possible self-catering options should a return trip be a possibility one day. Also being somewhat of an urban "townie" exploring Stornoway on foot on Sunday sounds appealing and the hotels open for meals will ensure I won't go hungry!

Have confirmed with hotel in Belfast that I can leave larger suitcase while I am away so will be able to travel light and will check longterm forecast prior to flight to get a sense of temps expected for clothes purposes.

Unless it has stopped recently there is a hourly bus service (run by Melbost bus) which leaves from the Airport to Stornoway town centre.

Not sure if it is relevant as Avoca will have 3 1/2 days in Stornoway, one of them is a Sunday which they are planning to spend walking round the town. For the latest bus timetable you can phone 01851 702256.

The bus stop at Melbost is 10 mins walk from terminal building..not easy to navigate if you have heavy baggage..There is a taxi rank right outside the door.
