Neptune's Staircase - viewing the operation of the locks

Hi folks,

Our family would like to watch the operation of the locks on the Caledonian canal. Where is the best place to see them in action? Is there a timetable or is one likely to see them operating at most times in summer?

Thanks for your advice.

Neptune's Staircase is in Banavie and has eight locks, there are slightly smaller ones at Fort Augustus and at Inverness.

It will depend on your mode of transport. The locks at Inverness are easiest to get to but less attractive than the other two. I prefer the locks at Fort Augustus.

As regards seeing them working, as we are in a drought they will be operating to maximum water efficiency so they may not just allow one boat through but wait until there are enough boats going up and down. This will lead to less frequent operation for the forthcoming Spring and may be into Summer.

Most of England is on short supply due to drought. I wasn't aware the Great Glen was suffering similarly right now. Am I missing something?

Defo no drought in North East of Scotland - very surprised at that post!

There are drought orders in operation in the southern half of England, but none in Scotland.

Fair enough. Just something issued by the National Waterways regarding going through locks in the near future. I thought it applied nationwide but obviously not in the Great Glen.

Thanks henneth for a great answer - that's everything I wanted to know.

Well I'm hoping for dry but not drought conditions when we're there!

Cheers everyone :)
