question about short hikes

I am looking for short hikes (45 min. or less round trip) which are suitable for elementary aged kids. Besides Spearfish Falls Trail, what else would you recommend?

Are you willing to venture outside of the Spearfish area? The Sylvan lake trail is shorter.

Yes, Sylvan Lake can really be as long or short as you'd like. Kids love the boulders to climb on. Roughlock Falls Trail in Spearfish Canyon is also a good one for a short hike. Presidential Trail at Rushmore is also not that long, although it has a lot of steps. The Door, Window, and Fossil Trails at the Badlands are also short and very accessible (boardwalks). Cliff Shelf is only .5 miles RT, but it does gain 200 feet in elevation. I'd also recommend the base trail at Devil's Tower. It's paved and provides ample opportunity to watch any climbers on the tower.

Although probably not considered hikes, the cave tours offer a pretty easy workout, but they are longer than 45 minutes.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Roughlock Falls is another great short trail! It is fairly close to the Spearfish Falls trail if you were looking to do both. Coming from Spearfish, take a right onto Roughlock Lane (this is right by the Spearfish Canyon Lodge). On Roughlock Lane, you'll drive a short distance before you reach a parking lot. The trail is very easy and offers beautiful views of Roughlock Falls.

Here is a link to the US Forest Service, listing hikes in the Black Hills.
