Car rental

Looking to rent a car on my visit in May, We will need one for about 3 days to do local touring. Checking prices it seems Dollar has the best price. Anyone have pro and cons about this company. For reasons too long to go into, it is necessary to do an airport close rental company. Enterprise and Avis are over a hundred dollars more.

I have never used Dollar. We have used Hertz and did fine with it. They seem to have a good car selection. The nice thing is that the airport is small, so you can get in and out quickly.

Just be aware that car rentals at Rapid typically have capped mileage rather than unlimited. Occasionally, you can get unlimited, but you have to watch for it. I see that right now mileage is capped at 1400.

I didn't fully understand your airport comment. Do you mean you'd rather rent at the airport rather than Dollar, which is off terminal?

You might also try using the Entertainment book for coupons and discounted rates. Others have had good luck getting a cheaper rate through Costco. Good luck!

And to add about Dollar/Thrifty- they add $10 per day for an additional driver and that is not included in quoted rate. We use Hertz and Enterprise and do check for discounts thru AAA, Costco, Sams Club, your insurance company, etc.

We rented from Enterprise right at the airport based on their unlimited mileage and no out of state restrictions.

I have generally had very good results with Enterprise, nationwide. We made the mistake of renting from Budget Rent a car in Rapid City (airport office), and they tried to rip us off later with claims of hail damage that did not exist on the car when we brought it back. We saw online that others had had the same problem with the same office in previous years. We complained to the Better Business Bureau and the SD Attorney General's office. So, don't go with Budget!

Book the best rate you can find now & then keep checking back. It wouldn't hurt to check it with some of the discount codes or coupons you would find at sites like www.rentalcodes.com or in the entertainment book: www.entertainment.com .

Once you have a rate locked in, keep checking. Rates go up & down all the time. If you find a lower rate, book it & cancel the old rate.

Rapid City Airport has a tax on any rental that originates from there. Dollar has a shuttle that will take you to their Rapid City office to pick up car and save you money. Call them to get more info. Also Casey's Corner rents cars at discount. May is a good time to tour in the Hills. Have fun!
