First Time in Surfside Beach - opinions for August stay

We are usually stay in Myrtle Beach the fist week in June and are Marriott vacation club owners and stay at the Grand Dunes. This year, the family is vacationing in Florida but my husband and I decided to come to South Carolina for our anniversary in August. The Marriott was booked but I found a reasonably priced room at the Surfside Beach Resort. Any opinions on this hotel? How does Surfside compare to MB? Location? Food?

Howdy, I think you made a good decision looking at Surfside Beach as an option. I'll go through your questions one at a time:

Opinions on Surfside Beach Resort: I have never stayed at the Surfside Beach Resort, but feel free to read the reviews to get a general idea of what to expect. My only suggestion is to not expect a brand new resort and remember, this was a Day's Inn several years ago and realize since this is at the pier, this will be the most crowded area of Surfside Beach, although probably still less crowded than MB. tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g54459-d97645-R…

How does Surfside Beach compare to Myrtle Beach? Surfside Beach Resort is one of two "high rise" hotels on the beach. The other "high rise" hotel is the Holiday Inn on the north side. Even though these are "high rise" hotels, they are much smaller than the high rise hotels/resorts/condos in Myrtle Beach. All the other properties are either condos or houses which mean less people and less crowded beach than Myrtle Beach Proper.

Location? I love the location of Surfside Beach, but that is my opinion. It is an easy drive to North Myrtle Beach using SR-31, and an easy drive to Georgetown just using US-17. I know some people don't like to drive places, but I enjoy the drive and the scenery. Also, being just south of MB means you are closer to Murrells Inlet, Huntington Beach State Park, Brookgreen Gardens, the Pawleys Island Hammock Shops, and Georgetown. There are also several grocery stores within a short drive and often farmers markets just off US-17 in the Surfside/GardenCity area. (Let us know if you need more info on any of these topics.)

Food? Well since you go to MB often, I am sure you are familiar with the awesome restaurants in Murrells Inlet, and you are now about 10 miles closer to Murrells Inlet! If you are not, let us know and we will fill you in on the options ;o)

One of my favorite lunch spots is actually on the Beach inbetween the Garden City Pier and the Surfside Beach Pier, Conch Cafe: tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g54242-d44…

Also, next to the Surfside Beach pier is a River City Cafe where it is nice to enjoy a burger sitting over the beach.

If you haven't already booked your room, you may want to consider looking at condos or houses in the area. I am not sure what your budget would be, but you may find something you like better than the Surfside Beach Resort.

I forgot breakfast. I usually go to Omega Pancake House one day for breakfast. http://omegasurfside.com/

Since it was too late to edit and I needed a new post, I'll add links to my favorites for dinner:

Thank you for all of the great information! I read up on the reviews of the hotel and I think I made a good choice but will investigate rentals too, just in case.

Thanks again!
