From where we stay, at the far south end of Windy Hill ( almost directly out from Barefoot Landing) it takes us about 25 min. to get to Calabash. You take Rt. 17 north to Rt 179 (just beyond the South Carolina Welcome Center) and after about 1.5 miles, turn Right on River Street ( at the traffic light ) and follow it down to the docks. That corner is also where the big gift shop "Callahan's of Calabash" , that you see in Sunny Day Guide, etc., is. We've been to Calabash several times but this last trip was the first time we stopped at that gift shop. It's very big - and very nice.
From where you are in Cherry Grove, even with the longer drive to get you up to Rt. 17, I'm guessing it wouldn't take you more than 15 or 20 minutes to get to Calabash.
The Seafood Hut is also on River Road, it's more of a take-out place, with walk up windows and picnic tables and a very small area to eat inside. But if you want to sit down and be waited on, go on down to the restaurants along the dock. We've eaten at the one that will be on your right as you approach the docks, can't remember the name of it, but we really liked Capt. John's better - which will be off to your left . There is a "sort of" drive way that leads over closer to it before you hit the main parking area - they all share the same parking lot so even if you miss that drive you can still "work your way over". When we were there on Sept. 10 we just parked centrally and then look all the resturants over - they're clustered there around the docks. One of the "speed boat dolphin cruises" and the Calabash Fishing Fleet operate from that area also.
