Is it a mistake to stay at Freshfields?

A new Marriott Residence Inn is opening this spring at Freshffields and we are considering a stay there this spring. We do not golf but love to bike and walk on the beach. Is this possible if we are not staying inside Kiawah resort? We are a retired couple and I just wonder if we should pay the extra $$$ to be in the resort. Are there other activities close by? Thank you.

The new hotel is mostly for folks coming for a night or two for weddings and the like, not really set up to enjoy the island.

If you have not been here before, be aware that Freshfields is not on the island, it is 2 miles from the front gate and about 2 1/2 miles to Beachwalker Park, where you would purchase a day pass to access the beach. The hotel is to the side of our commercial/dining/retail/entertainment venue.

If you are not staying on the island, you will only be able to access the island by bicycle. The Resort is only a small part of the island itself and there are several other companies, besides The Resort, who offer accommodations on the island, including Pam Harrington, Wyndham Resorts, Akers Ellis and VRBO, to name a few.

I would suggest spending the money to be on the island and enjoy being in the center of all our beauty, rather than a commercial venue (albeit a very nice commercial venue).

We don't golf and we live here!

Hope this helps!

I think it would be a mistake to choose the hotel at Freshfields for a vacation. It's doable, but not particularly relaxing. If your object is to relax in nature and enjoy the beach, you should stay on Kiawah.

Guests at the Andell Inn have no more access to gated Kiawah Island than does anyone else in the general public. Unless you've booked a lunch, dinner or tee time on Kiawah (for which you can get a temporary pass), you will have access to Kiawah only through public Beachwalker County Park. To get there, you'll need to drive and park ($7 per day parking fee) or to ride your bicycle 3+ miles each way. Once your in Beachwalker Park, you can walk or ride your bike up and down the beach, and can enter Kiawah through any of the public beach accesses.

TIP: Go to Beachwalker early if you plan to drive. Beachwalker Park fills up quickly during the summer and the automobile access to Beachwalker is limited by the limited number of parking spaces available. On weekends and holidays there are lines of cars waiting before the gates open at 9 am. http://www.ccprc.com/index.aspx?nid=1411
