Harbor Island for a 6 year old

We are a Gulf Oil Vacation Ruin Refugee and have started looking around the Harbor Island area. Currently looking at a unit in Cedar Reef Villas, but as we are not familiar with the area would like to gather info from those in the know. We are basically after a relaxing vaction with some ocean fun. What should we expect of Harbor Island?

Hi aprhj,

Harbor Island is a splendid little island that has limited resort amenities and whose beach fronts partially toward the Atlantic but mostly to the St. Helena Sound, a tidal estuary to the north. The Cedar Reef Villas face the Atlantic more directly, but if you are looking for more wave action, you should perhaps consider a condo unit on nearby Fripp Island (or as they call them villas). Fripp is a tad bit more expensive, but worth the extra money due to better resort amenities and a better beach, in addition to being a bigger island to go exploring. Between Harbor and Fripp Islands is Hunting Island State Park, which is a beautiful, undeveloped barrier island with a nice beach and hiking trails through the woods and along the marshes.

Nearby, you have Beaufort, which is a historic small town community that is very tranquil and has lots of neat shops and restaurants. You may want to consider doing a carriage tour of the historic district. Savannah and Charleston are about 60 - 75 minutes away from Beaufort, respectively. Also nearby is Parris Island, a marine corps facility which is interesting to visit.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to leave a response! Both islands are beautiful, though I'd consider Harbor to be more geared for residents and Fripp more geared for visitors.

I disagree with the previous poster. We have visited both Fripp and Harbor island. I think that Harbor Island is great for younger children. We have taken our grandchildren there many times. Our grandchildren actually enjoyed the beach experience at Harbor Island more than they did at Fripp Island. The waves are a good size for them. The beach at Harbor is wonderful. It is large, clean, and has some fascinating tidepools for younger beach goers. There are also numerous types of birds that entertain the kids. Right next to the condos are pools for the kids to use when they tire of the ocean. As mentioned by the previous poster, the rates at Harbor Island are less than at Fripp.
