Is the weather typically good for sunbathing in May?

We are coming for 5 nights the first weekend in May and are hoping for some sunbathing on the beach, is it warm enough for that yet? (and is the ocean still cold this time of year?)

Any recommendations on where to eat for a best first impression of the town?

It is entirely warm enough for sunbathing. We call it laying out. The rays are strong enough to burn from midMarch. Not joking. You'll get fried at Folly Beach in May as fast as you would in the Caribbean in January.

Ocean temp depends on you. Canadians will swim in May, thin-skinned locals dont want to go in before late June when the water is 98.6

We have had a cooler than normal spring, but it should be plenty warm enough to lie out in the sun then. For me ~ water is too cold.

It really has been a cool Spring and unfortunately looks like that will continue into first week of May. Depending on how sunny it is and how windy it is, it may be a little chilly to do a lot of sunbathing.

We really liked Rita's for lunch and dinner and Lost Dog Cafe for breakfast.

The breeze/wind off the ocean will be chilly until the water warms; however, if you can find a spot where you are protected from the wind, you will enjoy sunbathing even on a relatively mild day. Generally, locations closest to the dunes will be warmer because you can get under the wind, which lifts over the dunes. Be sure to use sunscreen!

You guys are awesome!!!!, thank you! I will wear my sunscreen and look for a "sheltered" spot near the dunes to lay out :) (and will give Ritas and Lost Dog a go!)
