Evening Activities

Ok, so imagine that you're in town for a work event and have an mid-week evening to yourself. What activities are available for someone alone? Any good places to get dinner or pick up takeout. (Do people eat in restaurants alone down there? Would takeout be better?)

Any activities for 5-9pm? I like art and museums and shopping.

Ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Before I offer any suggestions, I just want to clarify some things. Will you be staying in downtown Harrisburg or the suburban area, will you have your own transportation, and what time of year will you be visiting? This will help narrow down some ideas. Thanks.

A lot of the night life in downtown Harrisburg revolves around Restaurant Row (Second Street) which offers a multiple of varied cuisine restaurants and bars. I'm too old for the night life scene so unfortunately, I can't offer any major suggestions on that.

Duke's Bar & Grill at 313 South Front Street (US route 15) in Wormleysburg (not far from where you are staying) offers good casual dining that I would not feel uncomfortable going to alone. If you are visiting in the warmer months, they have a very nice deck overlooking the Susquehanna River. Even if you eat inside, some of the tables offer a good view. Another smaller local restaurant I like is the Pizza Grille with a Lemoyne (should be close to where you are staying) and Camp Hill location (is near the Capital City Mall).

If you are looking for take out type food, Al's Pizza & Subs at 409 South Enola Rd (US route 15), Enola is near Central Penn College.

The Capital City Mall in Camp Hill and the Camp Hill Shopping are close. Both are nice and offer the typical stores. If you want something more upscale there is The Shoppes at Susquehanna Marketplace in Harrisburg. For outlet shopping there would be the Tanger Outlets in Hershey.

The areas around all of the shopping venues mentioned above have a lot of chain restaurants available as well.

Are there any specific activities, other than art & museums, you enjoy and approximately what time of year will you be visiting? This will help me narrow down some suggestions.

The main museum in Harrisburg, the State Museum of PA closes at 5:00 pm, so I would suggest looking into some of the following:

The Sunoco Performance Theater at the Whitaker Center in downtown Harrisburg - check their performance schedule for when you are in town

whitakercenter.org/sunoco-performance-theate…

The Hershey Theater - again, check performance schedule

The Hershey Story - museum about Milton S. Hershey and all things chocolate, you could also visit Chocolate World, the visitor's center for Hershey Chocolate

The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg is open until 8:00 pm on Wednesday, closes at 5:00 pm other days

Caroline

I was recently in downtown Harrisburg for first time I am ashamed to say considering how close it is but was pretty impressed with the number of restaurants along restaurant row and the walking path along the river and park near the statehouse. I think you would feel comfortable eating alone. We went to Federal Taphouse- huge beer selection if you like that but not a brewpub. Food was good/basic. There were many more places that I would have liked to try except my crowd was not that adventurous.

Thank you. I will save these suggestions! They are much appreciated. I'm pretty much open to seeing the sights. I've never been to Harrisburg before so I figure while there, I should look around, right?

Fly---if you're too old for the nightlife I probably am too! LOL. I typically avoid bar scenes etc. when I'm traveling alone but do enjoy a nice meal out as long as it's not odd to be dining alone.

These are all great suggestions. I really appreciate your all taking the time to provide them!
