Best places near Seal Rock, OR - restaurants, activities

We will be staying near Seal Rock at the end of August for 5 days.

Would like some suggestions for places to eat and the best things to do in the area within a one hour drive.

Thanks!

Newport is a few miles north and the largest town in the area. My favorite place in Newport is north of town a bit [Yaquina Head Lighthouse] -- lovely lighthouse, pretty views, beach with tidepools. There's a smaller lighthouse in town at the state park. There is an aquarium if you have youngsters. You can crab off the docks, walk along the old bayfront, drink beer at the Rogue brewery [south of the bay]. Our fave restaurant is Local Ocean Seafood; there is an Irish pub in the Nye Beach area that is good [sorry, do not know the name].

If you want to take a whale watching or fishing excursion, Depoe Bay is a good spot [north of Newport]. Tidal Raves is a good spot to eat there.

Yachats it the other direction -- small town that is kind of fun. The Luna Sea Fish House is funky, small, but good food. I believe there are other good restaurants there -- hopefully someone will pipe up.

The whole Cape Perpetual area is beautiful -- drive to the top and take the short walk for amazing views. the Sea Lion Caves is a private enterprise where you take an elevator down to a large cave that is full of sea lions. It feels kind of hokey and touristy at first blush, but, once you are in the cave, it's interesting [and rather smelly!]. They will tell you in the gift shop if the sea lions are "in." Heceta Head is another lighthouse near there.

Thanks for the information - I like the "local" response, as those who live in the area know the best places to eat / visit.

Favorite places to eat in Newport: Local Ocean Seafoods, Saffron Salmon, Panini Bakery, April's, Panache and Chowder Bowl. If you have an ample budget and enjoy inventive (and absolutely delicious) cuisine, you will love Restaurant Beck in the Whale Cove Inn just south of Depoe Bay. Chef-owner Justin Wills is a multiple-time James Beard nominee, and was just selected by Oregon's governor to represent the state (defending champion) in the National Seafood competition this summer in New Orleans.

Hi and welcome to the forums, GigiandPapa. Of the posters here, I'm the only one who actually *lives* in the general area of Seal Rock, although others do visit :-)

There isn't much in Seal Rock itself - it's not really a town as such. Over the many years I've lived in the area, businesses ebb and flow in Seal Rock. There are a couple of galleries that have been there for years, though, plus the espresso stand, LOL.

Newport is only about 15-20 minutes to the north on a fast, straight stretch of highway, and most people in this rural area dine and shop there due to the big selection of restaurants and stores. Waldport is just a few minutes to the south and has a few small restaurants.

Be sure to drive south to Heceta Head lighthouse (now open again!) , and you may also be interested in taking dune buggy rides around Florence. Florence is about the one hour drive time limit, but if you wanted to see Roosevelt elk, you could drive about a half hour farther south to Reedsport. A few miles inland on Hwy 38 is the Dean Creek elk viewing area. You have about an 80-100% chance of seeing elk there.

A very short inland drive from just north of Seal Rock at Ona Beach will take you to the old Ona Grange and give you a glimpse of some coastal farms and ranches in the area.

There are lots of things to do in Newport - two lighthouses, aquarium, marine science center, oyster farm and so on. You can also take a bay cruise.

Depoe Bay to the north is a kind of kitschy (somewhat tacky, in my opinion) smll seaside town. If you are interested in whale watching, stop by the new whale museum in town.

From that link in post #1:

"It was not until 1936 that this remote location was connected by bridges to neighboring cities and its true beauty could be enjoyed by all."

Actually, *not* true at all!

As early as 1893 there was a wagon road connecting Seal Rock to both South Beach (south of Newport) and a town called Lutgens, on the north shore of the Alsea Bay. You can still drive some of it today (dirt) , although most of it is blocked by private property.

Also, once the town of Waldport became firmly established there was a ferry crossing the bay to points north. This was replaced in 1936 with the construction of the old bridge, which itself was replaced in 1992. For more information about the history of the area, stop into the interpretive center at the south end of the Alsea Bay bridge :-)

For plenty more restaurants and thing to do - just enter the town name in the search box at the top right of any TripAdvisor page.

Thanks OregonJohn97388 for the list of restaurants - as we are eating out most of the time, this is a great resource for us.

Thanks Half-Brit - the local people can give information that isn't always accurate online. I especially like the reviews of the locals for restaurants.
