Hi everyone -

I am trying to Priceline a hotel in Portland and I would ideally like to be in the Downtown Region. The prices are pretty high for our budget and they aren't accepting my offers.

There is a list of other regions that we could choose hotels in. We will have a rental car so that won't be a problem (how is parking in the city?) We are only there for one full day, plus a half day so the sites we want to see are the popular ones in the downtown region (Chinese Gardens, Japanese Gardens, Waterfront Park, Pearl District)...We also love to walk and just explore the city.

So - these are the other regions:

Beaverton - Hillsboro

Clackamas

Convention Center - Lloyd Center

Gresham - Troutdale

Lake Oswego - Tigard –

North Harbor - Jantzen Beach

Northwest Portland

Portland Airport (PDX

South Waterfront District

Any advice or thoughts? Thanks!

Are you using all of your "rebids" on priceline to get a downtown hotel?

What do you mean by "rebids?" I've been increasing the price a bit, but still too low.

I'm fairly new to priceline...any tips you have would be great! :)

Let me know if that doesn't make sense and I'll be happy to help.

Thanks! Yes - that does make sense. I guess I have been lucky in the past and never used them all up. I never realized you only had so many chances. I'll try again tomorrow!

But until then, any thoughts on where else to stay or is downtown the place "to be?"

Thanks again!

If you stay in the Convention center/ Lloyd center area you can pick up the free lightrail into the city center and thus see many of the sights you want. Also parking is easier/ free on the eastside of town. Try the Jupiter Hotel or even the Travel Lodge across the street from there, on Burnside.

I'd probably pick South Waterfront, which I'm guessing will get you a place like the Marriott Residence Inn or similar. Good location too, possibly near the streetcar, depending on how far south "south" is.

If you're using priceline, then I think downtown is the best option. You'll probably end up with the Hilton (3*) for $55-$75 or perhaps the Benson (4*) for $80-$100. I'm afraid that if you bid on something in the NW zone you might end up with that La Quinta on Hwy. 30. You might try the lloyd/convention area as a second choice, but I've never tried priceline for that because I really dislike all the hotels over there.

Here's what I'd do:

Bid $55 on a three star for downtown.

If rejected, add Beaverton and bid $65.

If rejected, add Northwest and bid $75.

If rejected, add South Waterfront and bid $80.

(Since there are no 3-stars in beaverton or northwest, you won't get those areas. No one knows what the 3* in South Waterfront is, but it's probably the Avalon.)

Or...

Bid $60 on a four star for downtown.

If rejected, go up by $10 and add whatever zone you want. (Since there are no 4-stars in any other zone, you won't get those areas.)

That should work.

I have never done this before, is it sort of like seeing if you won a lottery or something ? :)

How bad can the hotel you get be? Can you get out of it if you didn't want that one?

South Waterfront? does that go all the way to Johns Landing?

NW Portland is not just downtown? bummer... the La Quinta on 30 ? that is on the way to Sauvie Island, right?

Not good :(

It's kinda like a lottery, Scarlett. It's fun watching the little arrows turn blue while your screen says "processing your request..." Will I get the coveted Renton, Washington Hilton Garden Inn? Or the far less-respected Sea-Tac Super 8?

I've used priceline about a dozen or so times and--with the exception of a Best Western in Traverse City, MI--have always been happy with what I got.
