Best Ground Route Portland to Newport

Hello,

First time posting here . . . I know most folks are interested in the most scenic route, but I am hoping that someone can help me find the driving route that is the least mountainous. My husband and I are planning to take a trip to Newport in August. We're flying into Portland. I can see from the map and from earlier posts that there are multiple routes to choose from. Can someone please direct us to the safest routes for a skittish old lady? (That's me. He's fine.) I am totally unfamiliar with the terrain. Is there a route that won't have us looking over the guardrail at caverns below? Thanks in advance! (My husband thanks you, too. :-)

The coastal range is fairly low elevation. The fastest route and the one I usually take to go to Newport is down I-% and then cut over towards Corvallis on Hwy 20. There are some hills that may seem like mountains if you are from KC but they aren't treacherous. This route also brings you directly into Newport so you don't have to fight the crowded hwy 101 going through Lincoln City. I do not like driving through Lincoln City.

OR 18 is best to Otis. you can leave Salem on OR-22 and meet OR-18 near Grande Ronde.

Hi Susan F and welcome to TripAdvisor. We've lived on the Oregon coast for many years, and driven every possible route to the valley approximately a gazillion (or so!) times.

As far as "safest", I'd tend to lean toward phirl's suggestion of Hwys 22 and 18. You will have to go through Lincoln City which is trafficky and congested in summer, especially on weekend afternoons.

I drive Hwy 20 all the time (in fact we drove it today) and it is okay but has a stretch of about 12 miles that is very narrow. It also has lots of traffic, LOTS of truck traffic and if one of those big boys is crowding the line, it's very tight.

Neither of these roads has cliffs or caverns.

Hills, yes, but not very big hills ;-)
