Sea lions in Newport

See in paper today where the docks where the sea lions gather in Newport may be eliminated. Since several of us mention that, would be nice to know if they are.

The dock is apparently deteriorating and, since they were originally intended for boats, not sea lions, there is a fuss brewing about what to do about the docks...replace them, rehab them, etc....and where's the money going to come from (unfortunately, the sea lions don't get a vote or have deep pockets). Tourism? Bay commerce? It would be a shame to lose the loud barkers.

Yes, they've been wrangling about the sea lion docks for several months. The port manager doesn't like the sea lions, but there is a grass-roots movement to try to save/rebuild something for them so they will stay in Newport.

Facebook - 'save sea lion docks'.

I'm in Newport until tomorrow. How do we get there to see the sea lions?

When I was there a few months ago the sea lions weren't around. They were hanging out on the docks in old town Newport. On the new closest to Ripley's Believe It Or Not and Oregon Undersea Gardens.

Have been here the last week- sea lions on 3 floats at the bayfront.Used to be a LOT more floats. Most of the sea lions are on the rock jetty a little to the east. They're such a draw- I hope some compromise can be reached.

The docks have been deteriorating for years due to various reasons - not the least being too many 1,000 lb sea lions on them!

A foundation has been formed of local merchants and individuals to raise money to replace the docks. The goal is to have 120 feet of new dock so the sea lions will stay close to Port Dock 1. Cost is estimated at $25,000.

Lissa L, go to the bayfront on the north side of Yaquina Bay (it's not called "old town") and walk out on the wooden pier at Port Dock 1 near the eastern end. They'll also be on the marina breakwater near the Embarcadero.

Thanks for the directions half-Brit. Do you know where is a better place to park and walk to the dock?

Hmmm, this may be too late for you. Just park along the bay road anywhere you can find a spot near the east end - it's always terribly crowded in summer :-(

Being a Saturday, a few area of the roads closed due to a farmer's market it was terribly hard to find a place to park but we managed. Because of the time constraint, we just took the kids to the dock near the Undersea Gardens. Three huge ones nearby while the rest of the barking lots on the rocks further out. Since we've seen the sea lions at La Jolla last year, we didn't walk to marina breakwater near the Embarcadero. Thank you all. It was an enjoyable day.

Are the sea lions still here? What about with this crazy storm? We are thinking about heading down from Lincoln City tomorrow but want to know if they will be able to be seen...thanks!
