Lincoln City glass floats

Just got back from week in Depoe Bay. One day wife walked along beach near casino looking for the a glass float. Wife found one a few years ago and d-i-l found one a year or more ago, No luck this time.

But it made me stop in Vis Center in LC, 540 NE Hwy 101, to get update on what they are doing now. This year they started in mid-Oct. Think I remember when they went Labor Day to Memorial Day. People there are really helpful.

we found they placed a few more New Years

The program is called Finders Keepers. each year they place 2000 hand-crafted floats on 7 1/2 miles of beach in LC. This is from Vis Guide.

We almost went last weekend, for this, but ended up with other plans.

You are remembering correctly. They used to do this for longer. I can remember back in college heading over to the coast and looking for these.

Our son is in Portland and we are heading to Lincoln City with him the beginning of March. Saw the info on the visitors site about the floats. Such a fun idea. An suggestions on where/how/best time of day to find one...would be so exciting to bring one back to Iowa!!!! Thanks so much!

If I knew that we would have more. The two we have found have been been from LC just west of outlet mall south to Taft. and my wife has walked entire beach from Casino to Cutler City in different pieces. Then she enjoys walking beach

One day we decided to look for floats. We parked car walked down to beach. Wife says there's one right at her feet in a bush. Then she was hooked.

Funtrip44, the Lincoln City glass floats are made specifically for this and placed on the sand by volunteers. This project started in 1999. They will always be above the high tide mark.

These are not the "real" glass floats that people have found on the beaches for many years. Those were actually used by fishermen (mostly Japanese), and you can buy them in local shops. I've been told they still make and use glass ones but have not heard of anybody finding a real one for quite some time. Maybe we'll have a bunch appear when the bulk of the tsunami debris hits?

Just a quick note. I went to Lincoln City this weekend(2/16-17). Weather was not great but really wanted to try my hand at finding a float.. I spent several hours looking and happened to find one near Chinock winds casino, It was really exciting. My friend found one of the small Japanese floats. We ended up going to the glass blowing place where she made a paperweight which turned out great. We both really enjoyed ourselves!

We go to DePoe Bay several tines a year and look forward to our "glass float search" in LC. Last year I talked to a local who said his mother has dozens. According to him, the secret is to go out at night and shine a flashlight in the bushes. The floats will reflect the light so you can see where they are. May try this when there early in April.
