Eugene, OR - nearby cities with luxury accommodations?

We will be visiting Eugene the weekend of September 14th to go to the Oregon-Tennessee football game. We want to stay somewhere very nice - a luxury boutique hotel (the only one I saw listed appears to be booked up that weekend) or a winery/hotel outside Eugene, etc. What cities/towns should I be looking in that are within close driving distance to Eugene? Or is our best bet going to be heading back toward (or into) Portland? Any hotel suggestions?

The closest would be up in Newberg at The Allison, and after that in downtown Portland. Portland to Eugene is 2 hours. All that said, luxury boutique hotels are not really the norm out here although we have them. The PNW is typically much more laid back. Is there a reason you do not want to stay locally and get a feel for where you are visiting?

Inn at the Fifth, Campbell House and the Excelsior Inn would be the first choices. I would think they'd be booked already for that game, probably since the game was first announced.

Next choice might be Valley River Inn.

After that, there are a number of nice b&bs, but not a lot of "luxury" inns. Inn@the Fifth is the newest upscale place in Eugene.

None of the nearby wineries have lodging that I know of.

In Portland, The Nines is very luxurious. We have stayed twice there on the Club Level. For the wine country, The Allison is also very luxurious. Beautiful rooms with exceptional service. Have fun! :).

The only reason I don't want to stay locally (or actually I do but feel that there aren't many options) is that based on a few searches for hotels for my weekend (which appears to have a lot of hotels already booked), my options look like Holiday Inn or other similar chain. Not trying to sound snobby but that doesn't give me a feel for a place at all whereas boutique hotels would definitely do so. I've checked Inn at 5th and Valley River Inn, and they are both booked for my weekend. I'll look into these other suggestions, though - thank you!

There's nothing wrong with wanting to stay in really nice boutique / luxury hotels, BeccaTN :-)

There are a number of them in Oregon but they do tend to be in either Portland or in high-demand scenic areas, such as the coast or the Portland-area wine country.

Some of the coastal towns have *very* nice lodging, but Florence (just an hour from Eugene) does not, to my knowledge. Next closest that direction would be Yachats . . . not sure if the Overleaf would suit? http://www.overleaflodge.com/

Possibly the Heceta lighthouse B&B? http://hecetalighthouse.com/bed-breakfast

Let's face it: this is one of the highlight games of the early season and will be a big draw for alumni and traveling Volunteers. Even though the students won't be back yet for the fall, there is no question it'll be standing room only at Autzen. Many locals and Oregonians from the surrounding 100 miles book rooms in Eugene/Springfield to avoid having to fight the traffic before and after the game.

Fortunately, it's a 12:30 game, so you could stay along the coast or in Portland and still get back to your hotel in time for dinner, traffic permitting. I would love to have you stay in Eugene, however, to get a sense of this college town. Just hearing the roar at Autzen isn't enough.

Half0Brit--No, there is not anything wrong with that and no one said there was. Just recently though it was you who was talking about staying somewhere else other than "in a stuffy overpriced motel room".

Even as a die hard Beaver I have to agree with OregonPoppa. Staying in Eugene really would give you a much better feel for the town all that it has to offer. And the traffic will be VERY heavy, before and after the game, FWIW.

Despite the fact that it's in Salem, would The Grand Hotel suit your needs and preferences?

Maybe I missed it, but I've not seen the Eugene Hilton mentioned yet. While it's getting older, it's still quite nice, downtown and close to Autzen Stadium!
