Oregon coast with kids |
|
We are planning a weeklong trip to the Oregon Coast this August and we are looking for recommendations of places to stay. We have been thinking of renting a house to allow for more space and meal preparation, but would like to have a pool available to use as well (but this is not a deal breaker). We will be driving from Seattle with two kids (2 & 4) and maybe a teenager, so we don't want to go too far down the coast - probably no further than Newport. We haven’t been south of Seaside since before we had kids, so I know there are more options now. My initial thoughts are something in the Depoe Bay area – close enough that we can take the kids to the aquarium in Newport or head up to Devils Lake for some of the recreational activities there? Any suggestions on places to stay/things to do with kids would be greatly appreciated. Also, any suggestions as to places to stop along the drive to let the kids get out and run around for a little while? Thanks! |

Depoe Bay has no beach, rocky shore. Though beaches fairly close drive away, not walking distance. we have place we stay at Depoe Bay, but no little ones. I would think with kids that age and a week you would want a beach close. Several house options in Gleneden Beach a bit north of Depoe Bay. Beach is close there if you pick right places. Newport also good option but many of the places there are 88 stair steps to beach We had motel we stayed when our kids were younger in Taft, south end of Lincoln City, Beach was right out the back door and they had kitchens in many of the units. Westshore I think, if interested can be sure of name. Yachats also close to beach.

Thank you - I wonder if I should post in the "Oregon" forum instead of limiting it to Depoe Bay. Yes, it would be better to have easy access to a beach. Do you know anything about the rental homes at Bella Beach or Olivia Beach? Bella Beach says it is about 15 minutes from Depoe Bay and Lincoln City, about 2 miles south of Salishan? Olivia Beach says it is even closer to Lincoln City. They both claim "easy beach access" I don't see much in the way of reviews on either of them though... Or, are there similar places - where we can rent a "cottage" or condo closer to the beach? Thanks again

I forgot to ask, can you recommend any place in Gleneden Beach? I am not finding a whole lot - but that is probably since I am new to looking for houses/condos instead of hotels. :) I checked out the website for Westshore and it looks like it might be doable - 2 bedroom units with a kitchen on the beach.

I don't know if you are familiar with it or not, but you might try vrbo if you are looking for a vacation rental rather than a motel.

Have you checked vrbo.com lots of stuff there we used it for Maui, they have them listed by town, even checked out a few things on coast. Places on at Bella are very nice, though a short walk to beach. Friends of ours planned a family gathering there. and since we were headed for Depoe Bay checked it out, so we were shown units. They went, 15 of them or so and were very happy They are much nicer than west shore but also more expensive. Waldport has home rentals near beachs

Don't worry about which forum. I just check oreg forums and found your post.

We have stayed several times at the D' Sands Condominium Motel in Lincoln City. www.dsandsmotel.com Great place to stay with kids. It is right on the beach. All the rooms have balconies or patios. The family suites have two queen beds in the separate bedroom, plus a Murphy bed in the living room, full kitchen and fireplace. Nice indoor pool. The beach is lighted at night. It is an easy drive from Lincoln City to Newport, maybe 30 minutes.

I might suggest you think about staying in Newport, as there is more to do there than in Lincoln City, and you would not have to drive back and forth. Summer traffic can be pretty fierce, especially in August. For more info on things to do:

Your kids will love the Oregon Coas Aquarium, you may want to spend some time in Tillamook and tour the Cheese Factory, also. Take the kids to Cape Lookout State Park for a picnic, you can pick up deli items at the Blue Heron in Tillamook, there is also a small petting zoo there which is fun for kids. Enjoy your trip! :)

Thanks for the suggestions on staying in Newport. I am looking into that now. Any suggestions for lodging I should look into? We really want a place with a separate bedroom for the kids. When we don’t get that, we end up either having to go to bed at 8:30, or we all stay up and the kids are cranky the next day. I did see that Hallmark inns has a house that they rent, and still allow full access to the amenities at the hotel. Any other places you can recommend? p.s. Syrahgirl, I took your suggestion about room 151 at tides by the sea in seaside – that worked out great for us last year.
