What to do? |

In May my husband and I are coming up to Oregon/Washington for a week in May over the Memorial Day week. On the front end we are going up to eastern WA to visit wineries but then we will go back down to Corvallis (my sister lives there) for the rest of the week. As my sister will be working, my husband and I would like some day trips for a couple of days. We will have a car but want to be able to get back to Corvallis at night to visit with my sister. Can anyone suggest something we could do? |

Is there a reason you are going to WA for the wineries instead of staying here and visiting the ones in the Willamette Valley? Memorial Day Weekend is a huge event for the wineries here. If you can cut out WA, that would leave a lot more time for day trips around here. Corvallis is easy to do day trips to the coast (Newport/Lincoln City area), Silver Falls State Park (outside of Salem), the McKenzie River (outside of Eugene), or even to the Columbia River Gorge and Portland. ... and the days are getting very long at this latitude, so an early morning start from Corvallis provides much time for the coastal exploration.

Mtngrl has most of the places I would recommend seeing. You could probably even do a day trip to Crater Lake if you enter on the west side. There will probably still be a lot of snow there. Gotta go on the Umpqua River hwy because it is very scenic and stop at Toketee Falls. This will be a full day trip. You may even like the historic areas of Corvallis and the university for a walk if the weather is nice. Marys Peak is just a short drive from Corvallis and offers great views of the valley and possibly a wildflower or two. It is the tallest peak in the coast range. You could also take a day trip to Bend and stop in Sisters. Julie in Albany

If you drive the McKenzie River route, check out Sahalie and Koosa Falls. There is a parking lot where you can take a short hike and check out both falls.

Julie--I love Mary's Peak! Many memories from up there;)

I have fond memories of an OSU bird watching class at Finley Wildlife Refuge just south of Corvallis-if you like birding and seeing some of the last native Willamette Valley prairie. Also then you can go check out Tyee Winery which would be on the way to/from Corvallis. Probably not one of the 'top' visitor things to do, but would be a liesurely day or half day trip...maybe mix this with strolling around Corvallis and the OSU grounds(take a walk out to the Irish Bend covered bridge)... a really lovely campus-not that I'm biased or anything. :)

chinook---You are not alone...quite a few of us here are biased and love the campus:)

We birded the refuge several times. A moment of peace while on the road. Also there have seen Nutria (bad), deer and muskrat , plus lots of bird species.

helpme Good question about Wash wineries. if you mean Walla Walla. 5 hour round trip from Portland. Where as McMinnville wineries good day trip from Corvallis. Newport to Florence and back to Corvallis possible day trip if you want to see some of best of coast. Also Newport/Depoe Bay area easy to spend a day. with less driving

Gee I forgot to mention OSC.as others note some of us have biases, nice walkable campus.
